About This Video:
I invented method of making pots from wood ash instead of clay. The ash is mixed with water and formed into shape, left to set for 3-7 days and will then be water resistant like normal clay pottery. Unlike conventional clay pottery, no firing is required, the pot will set by itself in the air due to the high lime content of the ash. First the wood must be burned at a high temperature, well ventilated fire. The white ash is then mixed with water, molded into a pot using conventional pottery techniques and will then set due to the calcium oxide in the wood ash turning into calcium carbonate by absorbing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. The pot can then optionally be polished with a smooth object such as a shell while it's semi dry to give it a shiny finish. The resultant pot was then put in water for 24 hours without dissolving. It then held water for another 24 hours though some of the water seeped out. It should make a good alternative to clay pottery if there are no sources of clay around. A brick was also made to test it's ability to form bricks. The ash brick also passed the water test after spending 24 hours in the creek without dissolving.

About Primitive Technology:
Primitive technology is a hobby where you build things in the wild completely from scratch using no modern tools or materials. These are the strict rules: If you want a fire, use a fire stick - An axe, pick up a stone and shape it - A hut, build one from trees, mud, rocks etc. The challenge is seeing how far you can go without utilizing modern technology. I do not live in the wild, but enjoy building shelter, tools, and more, only utilizing natural materials. • Hi all, Due to some concerns from the subreddit, I've reached out to John Plant, owner of the Primitive Technology YouTube channel, for an update on his status during this pandemic, and because he hasn't released new videos for a few months now. I'm happy to be able to report that John is doing well and everything is fine. He thanks us for our concern and... has a nice surprise for us: He's unfortunately not allowed to reveal any details at this time, but John is currently taking a break from YouTube because he is working on a project for a cable network! Hope you all stay safe and healthy! was posted 13 days ago on reddit :)

come on bro. we need you now more than ever.
  • It's been 2 years, this man just appeared like some new messiah of primitive survival and left without a trace.
  • @ScuttlesPlays
Anyone else here sad to see there haven't been any more uploads on this awesome channel in 2 years? :(
  • @Bisqwit
It’s been over a year. YouTube is recommending to me plenty of other survival channels. This one is still the best; it explains what it’s doing, and considers tradeoffs between different designs and not just the looks for views.
  • >arrives >single-handedly creates a massive new branch of youtube videos >refuses to elaborate further >leaves
  • I'm going to try this process using bamboo leaves. Where I live, there's a large stand of what I think is giant timber bamboo. A little research suggests that bamboo leaves are unusually high in silica. I'm interest to see if, by burning bamboo leaves with wood or bark and then following this process, I can produce a crude calcium-silicate-type cement.

For all the people to who are worried about him. He is fine. He posted this on Reddit: John here, I'm ok. Wet season is starting to show now with the first storms, no fire ban in my shire. Spent Christmas with family in Brisbane so missed the big storm that happened the other day here. Back home now, the current hut survived well with no leaks, all the un-fired bricks safe under the eves. All kilns and furnaces (out side the hut) sustained limited to no water damage after the 30 mm of rain we had while I was away. Thanks for your concern.

Let’s hope he’s spent the year building for a banger
  • please come back mate . i know that the other channels have ripped your channel and YOUR genre off but don't give up we need you in this tough as time I cant think what life would be without you. please comeback
  • @wu1ming9shi
I really like how you take as little as possible from a living tree. Like the bark is not from the tree itself but leftovers from the ground. It's true survivalism indeed!
  • @lilyy4427
The only channel with absolutely no drama, no controversy, just a man makin dirt into slightly more useful dirt.
  • @moofy69
he went so primitive he stopped using a camera
  • I was just speaking of you to a friend yesterday about building a kiln and making some pots and other things like divided plates and little "dutch" ovens for bread etc. I really love your channel I've long thought about going off grid and health permitting will do so soon your videos and expertise have helped me in many ways, there are so many possibilities!! Thank you very much for sharing, may God Bless you and keep you.
  • This guy started a whole genre of YouTube content and dipped out. I just hope he’s happy somewhere doing what he loves!
  • @AllenHanPR
CONGRATS JOHN. You just hit One Billion Views!!! I know I'll never see an upload of yours again, but I hope you all the success in the future and your TV show that is coming. Four years ago I was at a Chrismas party waiting for dinner to start and we were scoping videos on youtube to watch on the our smart TV and we stumbled upon your video and we proceeded to have the whole party drop what we are doing and just watch you build in the woods. 20 of us will never forget how you entertained us. Even though none of us see each other anymore like we use to. It was a great memory when we were still in our 20s.
  • @lamoo0286
Glad to say that he’s finally back.
