American hip hop-generation author, activist, recording artist, and film producer, SISTER SOULJAH, paid us a visit on Sway in the Morning. She not only talked about her new book, A Moment of Silence: Midnight III, but she also weighed in on the racial tension at Mizzou, Orange is the New Black netflix original and stories from her time with Public Enemy.

It's clear that Sister Souljah is a leader, but sometimes her creativity is swiped. Could Orange is the New Black be copyright infringement? Possibly, but advice from her husband keeps her pen pushing.

"Sister, we just create, and we just keep creating." Her husband says. "They wait, and they keep copying. And we keep creating. They can't catch up to us, because we are the original creators of it."

Souljah, goes on to explain why she's not interested in going to court and dealing with the legalities of it. "Just keep creating."

While in studio, she also gives us some never-before-stories from her time with Public Enemy! Watch below for more and grab her new book A Moment of Silence: Midnight III.

  • Thank you for this interview. Souljah is so creative. The guilt of them using her work/words without permission will eventually come back to them.
  • She is on total Big Mama status to me. Meaning, she commands that level of respect. Sista Souljah walks in the room, she automatically gets final say in whatever's happening.
  • I'm reading "No Disrespect" and I love how smooth the read is. You are a very exciting writer, Sister Souljah.
  • @apasolini
I love SS - her eloquence and intelligence are astounding.

The Coldest Winter Ever..........My oldest sister who told me to read this book over 30 years ago was one of thee best I have read...........Love you Sista Souljah always!

This woman does greatness. I've never even seen orange is the new black but i believe w/o doubt they would steal her work. It must be painful and exhausting to sue all the time but if bigtime networks, producers, actors glorying in fame, n all that are making money off her work I think she should definitely pursue getting her dues, like that matrix woman did. Its Yours, Your effort n time etc - make them pay.

A women who TRULY stood for something!!! All do respect to the Sister Souljah!
  • @kenkoolhimes
She seems way more relaxed on Sway vs the Breakfast club interview

WoC's creativity is always questioned and/or stolen by mainstream. She and several people noticed the similarities from her book from 16 years ago within OITNB. Clearly, the [series] is based off of the book by Piper Kerman. But, the series also has a team of writers. The legend Sister Souljah is not telling a lie and she played it like true professional OG in the game.

Sister Souljah - a scholar, a politically self conscious leader, a warrior and a sheroe. She’s solid as a rock.
  • @TheBaybunie
I love this sista! She's always on point! I like how she mentioned the writers from "Orange is the New Black" stole her writings. And she went on to say, "when you are a writer, a creator, you recognize your words anywhere". That is the point that I've been making about all this "organized gang-stalking and electronic harassment" shit I've been experiencing. At the end of the day it's brain hacking, "remote intellectual property theft" (if you doubt maybe you should brush up on your knowledge on the capabilities of modern technology) by people who don't respect you enough to just ask and pay you. Although, Sista probably didn't go through what I went through, sounds like she experienced a lot.

So glad the TCWE will finally be a movie! I read it in junior high and I'm 28 now! Been waiting forever!
  • @iTsChiChiBitch
I'm mad that girl used k.Michelle as an example lol. Jasmine Sullivan is the closest comparison to Adele. Jasmine Sullivan is so underrated it's sad
  • @Chaquita_T
