The world-renowned marketing and leadership author Seth Godin talks about the difference between leadership and management, the confusion surrounding them, and why the world needs more leaders.

Key Points:
• Management works well in terms of increasing economic efficiency and productivity. But, in the face of rapid change, the world needs leadership to get through this stage of unprecedented transformation.
• You should strive for excellence. Producing something truly great is the only way to build competitive advantage because sophisticated robots, artificial intelligence, and low-paid labor will handle the trivial job of assuring quality.
• You should focus on “soft skills” which are actually “real skills”. Those are the characteristics that differentiate a potential employee from a robot.
• Effective leadership can help companies navigate difficulties and failures, and eventually find successful processes to get forward.

Questions to consider:
• How can you become more of a leader than a manager?
• How can you and your organization strive for excellence instead of just quality?
• Are you focusing on real skills?
• How can you make better processes in order to fail more efficiently?

I participated in Seth's leadership workshop at a facility called The Assemblage where he taught this material and it was so powerful everyone was fired up inspired for months. Highly recommend.
  • The starting vedio caught up my attention, I realised that in order for us to win the game we need to think, and do our tactics and start to manage on how it's gonna work. Thank you so much Mr. Godin for sharing your amazing knowledge.
  • Seth breaks this down to a simple understanding. Leaders definitely need training because leadership is a skill. The advertising industry showed me for years there was a huge difference between a leader and a boss. I learned so much from creative leaders who wanted nothing more but to share their knowledge with me for preparation of higher opportunities. When you're invested in the growth of employees there's no time left in the day for micromanaging. ~ Tim

Seth Godin is tremendously great. I'm look forward to meeting him on Next MBA Marketing soon.
  • This is true. Leadership is hard, it stands out, it makes you vulnerable yet bold at the same time. Leadership takes the hit of making things different. I thank God I'm pursuing a unique path in solving how businesses approach marketing and embracing technology.

Very true, leadership requires managers to be able to step up and take responsibility for setting the direction for the future which inspires people to keep pace of how the world is evolving.

Absolutely Loved this . I am just now breaking into my first role as a manager and this has provided me alot of information to consider as i strive to be a better leader!
  • Leadership and management are distinct concepts, but both play crucial roles in organizational success. Understanding the differences between the two can shed light on how they contribute to making a difference in an organization. Leadership > Vision and Inspiration: > Innovation and Change > Relationships and Influence > Risk-taking > Long-term Focus Management > Planning and Organizing > Implementation and Control > Problem-Solving > Authority and Control > Short-term Focus
