Well let’s not forget that Michael Jordan played nine seasons of professional basketball and won three NBA championships to prepare for his role in Space Jam lol

Robert Downey Jr essentially lived out Tony Stark's redemption/comeback story. After being lauded prodigies in their respective fields, both succumbed to dependence issues and reckless behaviour and the like. Before undergoing experiences that allowed them to battle their issues and emerge on the other side as something of a highly praised role model.
  • I suppose it doesn't count because it wasn't at theaters, but Patrick Stewart did a single-man stage production of "A Christmas Carol" for years before playing the role of Scrooge in a tv movie.
  • @Menuki
Growing up, I thought “Remington Steele” was a James Bond TV show

I admire Christian Bale's dedication to his movies. The Machinist, The Fighter, just to name a couple more.
  • Mario Van Peebles playing his father Melvin Van Peebles in Baadasssss!
  • Rob Lowe's Number 2 Jr. and Robert Wagner's Number 2 was of course a take on Adolfo Celli's Emilio Largo, SPECTRE's #2 for the 1965 James Bond film Thunderball.
  • I'm still convinced Ryan Reynold's is the one who leaked the footage. Tim Miller just looked the other way while the USB/DVD sat there.
  • Samuel L. Jackson spent three years learning guitar for his role in Blacksnake Moan.
  • You could add on to this list: Jim Carrey playing Andy Kaufman; Wyatt Russell playing a young Kurt Russell in “Monarch”; Henry Cavill for “the Witcher”; John Malkovich for “Being John Malkovich”; and the entire cast of “This Is The End”.
  • No shade to Alden Ehrenreich, but he looks NOTHING like young Harrison Ford. During“Solo”, I spent the whole movie thinking Ehrenreich was merely cosplaying as Han Solo. I just couldn’t suspend my disbelief, and I’m sure I’m not alone. However, seeing the uncanny resemblance that Anthony Ingruber has at 3:52 to Ford makes me think Solo would have performed FAR better in theaters with an actor that genuinely looked like young Han.
  • I remember Tom Hiddleston telling a story about his mom after they's seen the first Thor movie together. She looked at him and said (I'm paraphrasing here) "That's the character you've been doing around the house since you were little."

Reynolds plays Wade Wilson in Origins, but not Deadpool. Reynolds wasn't available for the final fight scene filming, so that is another actor. And because it wasn't Reynolds they had him be unable to speak to avoid that being noticeable.
  • Pierce Brosnan is the James Bond of the Millennials and he is a perfect fit for the wacky role.

Zombieland: Bill Murray had spent his entire life preparing for the role of playing himself.

Then there’s unfortunately Ben Platt for the movie of ‘Dear Evan Hansen’
