Oil fever has arrived in Suriname! This small and sparsely populated South American country is the latest to join a select list of countries with large offshore oil fields. Neighbouring Guyana is already striking gold, now Suriname hopes to follow in its footsteps.

However, dangers lurk for Suriname: geopolitical tensions have been brought to the continent by Venezuela over its claim to the Essequibo. And, as if that were not enough, a thoroughly corrupt state negates the chances of wealth reaching a population shaken by poverty and stagnation.

How did Suriname get to this point, why are so many hopes being pinned on this small country, and can the conflict over the Essequibo Guyana disrupt Suriname's plans?

I hope Suriname uses this money to build schools, universities, infrastructure and create industries in different segments.

    Venezuela: Did someone say oil?
  • Goodluck from India 🇮🇳 and The Netherlands 🇳🇱 🙏🏽. No need for corruption or greed. there is plenty, enough for everyone and for next generations. Take care of your forest!

Oil discoveries are not as exciting as it sounds because most countries with oil wealth don't have their people prosper from it.
  • The map of Suriname is not complete here.Tigri is not from Guyana, but from Suriname. Please put the right map in the future!
  • Thank you VisualPolitik to focus the spotlight on us. We'll do everything in our power to deal with the mentioned issues. Have a great weekend. Greetings from Suriname.
  • Surinam has been known for it's resources in history. A major amount of aluminum ore (bauxite) was mined here for American WWII planes!

I love suriname from Indonesia 🇮🇩… i hope suriname can be a prosperous country after this oil discovery

Fairly good explanation. Your prononcation of Bouterse however.... LOL I'm Dutch. We're quite well informed about the situation there.
  • @snakemaster1982
FYI; from 1940 tot 1943 Surinam supplied 65% of US bauxite imports. The aluminium extracted from this was mainly use for the war effort.

If oil inevitably led to the prosperity, Venezuela would be a utopian state! Success with oil depends on good governance. This is why Norway is so successful and why oil-rich countries without a democratic tradition or low corruption don't do so well. We like to hear of success stories, but the signs are not good here.
  • @carma1255
that is NOT the correct map of Suriname you just showed
  • Thanks for the video. Couple pronunciation corrections: - Bouterse: first part “Bout” is exactly like “about” but without the “a”, the rest you pronounce like this: bout-er-su - staatsolie: staa-ts-oh-lee

I have supplied the drilling pipes to Staatsoil Suriname for the exploration there. Suriname could be the Kuwait of South-America. Full of oil and gold. Only problem is probably their leadership. If they get a leader with vision….poverty could be gone very fast, as its a country with a very limited population.
  • @aRGee1965
Right : the pronounciation of Bouterse is completely wrong. And then the most important thing you guys forgot to mention : he was recently sentenced to jail for 20 years. Probably Bouterse excaped the country and currently there's an arrest warrant from the Suriname government. If caught he will die in prison and he won't be a political or influential factor anymore.
