This was a dig we did back in late June. The house was old (1860-70's era) but unfortunately the privy showed evidence of being "dipped". This is when they would clean out/empty the contents of the pit, discarding them elsewhere and prolonging the time they could keep using this hole to avoid having to dig another pit and move the outhouse over. Despite it being dipped, and a fairly small wood-lined pit, we were still able to pull some pretty decent finds! Here's a link to some really interesting history on the "S.
