Broken Down in Patagonia | Stranded, Again |

Published 2024-07-19
Excited to finally get a proper start to my Patagonian motorcycle adventure riding the legendary Ruta 40, I was quickly hampered by an issue with my motorcycle (Honda CB500X). If you know about Argentina, you know the one thing you don't want to have to do is search for and pay for motorcycle parts. Because of the import taxes that Argentina has on moto parts, all parts (and even worse, tires) are insanely expensive, with little availability. This left me stranded on a farm (Estancia Don Jose/GuenGuel in Rio Mayo; thanks!) in the middle of Patagonia for 4 days while I sorted out my issue. It's funny, the only two times (so far) that I've ever been broken down and/or stranded were in two of the remotest regions of the world (Arctic and Patagonia) that have a reputation for being hard on vehicles. The ironic, and embarrassing, twist is that in both cases the faults were user induced.. One of the reasons I love Argentina so much is the people, any time I needed any assistance there were never a shortage of people willing to help me out. Riding a motorcycle through Patagonia Argentina is definitely an adventurous motorcycle ride, although of a different kind than I have recently gotten used to.

I'm sorry when you get trouble like this, but at the same time I am glad you're showing us these things, so we can learn new things. Ride safe!
  • Patagonia is insane and a test to our motorcycles, hearts, asses and wallets. Haha. I've been stranded in a city for 2 nights because the sidewind was 100km/h. Hope everything's fine out there. When and if you come to Brazil, the tyres will surely be cheaper. Haha.

Ouch! I think the tire price was probably more traumatic than the thought of being stranded on the road in the cold weather. Safe travels Ken.

  • Would love to see a long-term review of your bike/gear towards the end of your trip. I'm currently looking at the Honda NX500 when it becomes available here in N.A. Excellent video as always. Cheers, buddy!

I hope things work out well in the long run. That's a very expensive tire. It almost cost as much as (in USD) michelin on my car.
