First Race Disaster Ecotec Swapped Miata | RuggedBadger.com

Published 2024-04-27
It's fast but we had lots of reliability issues for our first race with the Ecotec Swapped Miata at Gingerman with the ChampCar Endurance Series. We moved up the field and Nick got his first race laps in the Miata, but we lost the alternator belt tensioner, sheered a crank pulley, bent a keyway and had to tear down the front of the engine in the car and our spare engine to get ready for day-2.

  • Exciting video guys! When you said you were losing the clutch I figured it would be a broken downpipe jamming up on the slave. There's so little clearance there! The melted R engine mount is a common problem, I made a little DEI heat sheild around it but you could also direct air and/or cut an extractor hood vent behind that area to evacuate the hot air in that spot. This car will be a weapon once you iron out the wrinkles!

You sure were reeling them in one by one at the beginning! You should have a future winning car after the bugs are sorted out. You probably need to fabricate some good heat shields for the clutch slave and the motor mount on the header side that incorporates some external cool air flow. I plan to do that on my street car when I get back to working on it.
  • @cabriniman
I double nutted eccentric nuts on the header to downpipe and I still had problems with them coming loose. Our solution was a side pipe exhaust exiting the engine bay in front of the windshield wiper motor
  • @FRSport1
I had the same issue with the header to downpipe bolts coming loose, I resolved it by switching to vband. I'm sure you're aware but the crank bolt is tty. Is the pulley the cause of the thrown belts?
