Cape Pembroke Lighthouse, Falkland Islands 1997

Trinity House Lighthouse Service in Britain used to look after several lights abroad, one of which was Cape Pembroke in the Falkland Islands. This lighthouse is now under the control of the Falkland Island Government, but because it used to have Keepers from here (a long time ago) I managed to get to go and video it. The lighthouse was manned, by local Keepers up until the war in 1982, when it was discontinued. When I got to see it, it was an empty shell with a badly damaged lens. So this is my visit with lots of Island and the wildlife thrown in. This visit was only made possible thanks to the kindness of the Governor & the Falkland Island Government.

I'm really impressed with how you tell so much with so little narration. You produce with a distinctive style. I enjoyed this and your other videos very much!

Brings back many memories from my 2 tours to the Falklands during my time in the Navy. It is a place like no other, the baroness, the history and the unique atmosphere you feel at any sites linked to the war. Contrasted by the friendliness of the locals. Another great video. Thank You.

I enjoyed that Thanks very much for pulling it all together for us. I lived next door to a woman who had lived on the islands ( before the war) for 20 years she talked very fondly of them and missed them greatly. But said she never go back Cheers

Another unique documentary from the Lighthouse world! (Your commitment re. making this trek to these island, is testament to the old adage ''Never take 'No' for an answer'' - if you're really stoked on something, that's always been my credo...) (And, btw: seeing the smoke rising from the chimneys, immediately brought back memories from my childhood! - I'll never forget walking past our neighbors house early in the morning, in cold, crisp, clear coastal air, and inhaling the truly unique aroma coming from the neighbors chimney, the were burning peat! [Our 'olfactory sense', is something that enables us with one of our absolute strongest 'memories', funny how the genes work . . . .) Thanks again Peter, for the opportunity to once again take an 'armchair travel' with you! - Much obliged . . . . ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Peter, you jammy sod! How did you manage to wangle your way on this little jolly? Nice to see the old style Bedford four tonner again. Some interesting looking birds down there. Thanks again for this fascinating series of videos. They really are a great piece of history, and deserve a wider viewing audience. All the best.

Beautiful film... very nicely done. Inspires me to get my camera out :)
  • I am in absolute agreement with Nans Niemand's statement and can not add to it except that Light Keeper Peter Halil also does an excellent job panning his shots giving the view time to absorb and possibly reflect on the material as perhaps Peter Halil wants to portray. Additionally, and probably most important, is the necessity for this subject to be documented as much as possible and in the unedited manner so to enhance the effect and understanding of the viewer/scholar. I say this by the wisdom learned having the special honor as a child to listen to so many WWI stories by Valor-Decorated US veterans as I grew up back in the 1960's. Thank you Light Keeper Halil. Matt Burden, Boatswainsmate III, U.S. Coast Guard.
  • What an absolute privilege, visiting an outpost like the Falklands.
  • Loved the video but I cannot understand how there are 3 dislikes unless they refer to 1982 in which case... That was 37 years ago and this is simply a visitors recording of history.

This is where I want to retire to when I finish my working for wages life and can relocate their with my savings and superannuation income. Buy a boat and live in quiet and clean solitude with some hobbies and island interest groups or something to join and be part of the community at large. Beautiful yet desolate, extreme weather and tranquillity all in the same place.
