VTOL HeeWing T-1 Ranger Tail-Sitter - Maiden hover

There are quite a few VTOL conversions of this plane, but many are with tilt-rotors. This requires 2 extra servos, an extra motor/ESC/prop, a rear motor mount, and replacement tilt mechanisms for front motors ….. this is a lot of extra weight.

Instead I’m going to keep close to the stock weight (no extra motors/servos/mounts), replace the tail assay with a simple ‘stand/tail-fin’ and configure a stil-sitter setup of the flight controller!

PNP Heewing T-1 Ranger, converted to a flying wing as a VTOL Tail-sitter.
- Motors: stock replaced with 1606-3200kV
- Props: 4X2.5 2-blade
- Flight Controller: Matek F411, running Ardupilot 4.2
- Tail boom and surfaces replaced by 5mm Corflute fin/stand
- Wingtips fitted with plastic cable ties to balance
- Battery: Li-Ion 3000 mAHr
- Camera: Foxeer T-rex 1000 TVL
- VTx: 5.8 GHz with Fatshark cloverleaf

This is the maiden flight - a simple hover test.

Power required: 8-9A for hover. Weight 790 grams.

Standard Ardupilot configuration for Tail-sitter, using the online guide for setting initial variables.

Next flight will be transitions to/from level flight, and other hover modes (Q-Hover, and Q-Loiter), plus tuning the transition rates and trigger angles.

Also need to fine-tune CoG, which is calculated to be at 40mm behind Leading edge.

  • Nice experimenting. Look forward to seeing how progresses. You got my attention by using the T1 as base for the build vs. F1 which is already a flying wing.  Makes sense, as a tail mod is easier that doing bi-motor wing mods.
  • Is Matek F411 correct? Thought it wasn't supported due to limited memory. Curious, as I have a spare F411-WSE.

Could you fly this as a plank? 🤔 I have a T1 kit still in the box and now you have me curious 😎🤙
