1979 was the last year of HDT and was their greatest victory ever.

This video shows all the highlights of the time Brocky won by 6 laps and set the lap record on the last lap of the race.

King Brock at his absolute best.

"1979 was the last year of HDT" isn't right. In 1969, Holden formed the HDT through an elaborate, arm’s length ownership structure to keep within GM’s global “no motorsport” rules. They appointed Harry Firth to run it, and upon his retirement, John Sheppard took over. 1979 was the last year that HDT had Holden backing, as Holden pulled the pin on funding as Ford had done the same. Beyond 1979, the team was sold off to Vin Kean (the South Australian Holden dealer), who rallied together a bunch of Holden dealers to help fund the race team with support from Marlboro and later Mobil, which also resulted in the HDT road cars, which were backed by Holden and sold through the dealers which helped finance the team. The 1980s were arguably HDTs best years, they won Bathurst 5 times (from 8-10 attempts), Sandown twice, the ATCC once (with multiple placings), won odd ball events (Pukekohe 500) and several rounds of the European Touring Car series. So perhaps 1979 was the last year HDT was owned by Holden but certainly not the last year of HDT.

Brockie, l swear he's the greatest driver l've ever seen. That A9X was just something else and being a Ford man l dip my hat to the Legend👍
  • Amazing - Falcons on the back of tow trucks everywhere and Brock driving around like it's a Sunday cruise with the Holden Torana A9X cementing itself as Australia's greatest.

I shed a little tear every year that Brockie is gone. Now that there is no more Holden I don't even watch the race anymore. sob, sniff

never forget the first time I saw a Torana liftback, back in the day, painted in matt black decked out in A9X livery, flared guards, fat tyres and rear facing hood scoop, it blew me away, sitting there, just parked on the street, in our local town of Henderson, West Auckland.

  • Bathurst and Brock not mentioned, it’s like talking about England and WW2 then neglecting to reference the Spitfire and Churchill. A week after the footy GFs then The Great Race, OMG how great is Australia. RIP Peter Perfect. 🇦🇺👍🍺🍺
  • Yes because he led from start to finish in an Holden Torana A9X, the best car he ever piloted and he won by 6 laps. Stunning. I still remember it. This is where he received the "King" title.

Just brilliant, I can remember seeing coverage on the BBC's Grandstand Saturday afternoon sports program, 'Grandstand' of this event for several years and looked forward to it as the year drew to a close, I just loved it!
  • If you are going to go down that road, Then in 1972 Peter Brock drove the race car from Melbourne to Bathurst and then drove the full 500 miles of the race to win outright, in a single driver effort. For his first Bathurst victory

Yes - that bloke. The one and only Peter Brock. The best sales rep GMH ever had. Never let up. Gave it a red hot go from start to finsh. Yes, gotta admit the machinery was pretty damn good too.

Ever Owned a Torana… They are a point & shoot weapon…. I still shed a tear over having sold mine….. Life lesson learnt….the hard way….!!!
  • Richo should get some of the credit too. He did most of the driving in the tricky wet conditions.
