A severe storm packing hurricane-force winds pummeled the Houston-area on Thursday, killing at least four people, blowing windows out of high-rise buildings and leaving some 800,000 homes without power as much of the area was plunged into darkness.

Much of downtown Houston and its commercial district were littered with fallen power lines and glass from shattered windows following the storm, with traffic and street lights knocked out across the city, the mayor, John Whitmire said.

The killer storm system also battered Louisiana and other Gulf Coast states, leaving them without power on Friday morning.

0:55 everyone screaming as the power goes out, as though one one has a flashlight on their cellphones.

  • I don't understand why big buildings have so many windows. Looking at that one building, it's all windows.

Reminds me of hurricane Ike... though usually the deaths would be someone running a portable generator too close to the house or trying to chop down a dead tree without the experience to do so. I remember that once a lady tried refueling her portable generator while it was still running and spilled some onto the hot engine...
