It's over! SpaceX says Goodbye to B1058 after 19th landing because...
It's truly a Christmas tragedy in the world of space exploration. The historic Falcon 9 booster B1058, a legend with 19 successful flights under its belt, has met an untimely end. In a heart-wrenching announcement by SpaceX, the booster succumbed to high winds and waves, toppling over while returning to port. Just a whisker away from hitting the incredible milestone of 20 flights, its journey concludes prematurely. Now, the baton passes to B1060, set to carry on the legacy of reusable rockets. This booster soared through 18 prior launches, but newer Falcon boosters boast enhanced landing legs designed to self-level and prevent such mishaps—a testament to SpaceX's continuous drive for innovation and improvement.
SpaceX also promises that this tragedy will not happen again in the future:" Newer Falcon boosters have upgraded landing legs with the capability to self-level and mitigate this type of issue", the company shared.
Absolutely, B1058 will always hold a special place in SpaceX's journey. With its 19 triumphant launches and landings, it remains an incredible achievement. Its legacy of reliability and remarkable service will forever be honored and remembered in the annals of space exploration. Farewell to a true pioneer!
''This one reusable rocket booster alone launched to orbit 2 astronauts and more than 860 satellites — totaling 260+ metric tons — in ~3.5 years, SpaceX!'', SpaceX shared about the B1058 achievement!
For its maiden launch on May 30, 2020, the rocket-propelled NASA astronauts Doug Hurley and Bob Behnken into the history books on SpaceX's first mission to send people into orbit.
This ended a nine-year gap in America's capability to launch astronauts into low-Earth orbit and was the first time a commercial spacecraft achieved this feat. At that time, the rocket was fresh from SpaceX's factory in Southern California, glistening white in color, with a bright red NASA "worm" logo emblazoned on the side.Over the course of its flights to space and back, that white paint has darkened to a charcoal color. Soot from the rocket's exhaust has accumulated, bit by bit, on the 15-story-tall cylinder-shaped booster. The red NASA worm logo is now barely visible.
The final launch and landing of B1058 happened on December 23.

  • B1058 served its purpose beyond expectations and in its final landing left behind valuable data that will ensure success for its successors. Great job SpaceX!

Thank you, B1058, now your 18 flights ahead of any non Space X booster.
  • @markoreilly3414
It landed though ! 🙂 . Falling off the boat isn't a flight failure

Awwww. Goodbye B1058. Still an amazing achievement SpaceX.
  • @jedisdad2265
Any of the Falcon boosters which have made more than one flight are an incredible testament and legacy.
  • @user-de8bu5es6f
Just because this booster wont fly again commercially, it does'nt mean its wasted. This booster has flown and landed 19 times so it is the best booster of them all to undergo invasive or destructive testing to quantify the potential longevity of this design.

Where was the octograber? I thought they where securing the bosters to the deck of the drone ships with the octograber robot.

i hope space X is holding on to the wreckage of some of these important boosters, or at least select parts, will be extra cool to visit the space X museum in 10 or 20 years and see all this history laid out

Seems like a lot of ppl commenting seems to completely have missed out the fact that SpaceX nailed another landing with this booster. Nothing wrong with the the rocket/booster and the launch and landing. Purely a transportation accident.

Space is hard. The ocean can be merciless.
  • @andycharger
Did the commentator say “starship made good but not great progress in 2023”? Is this for real? What is it being compared against? Every other multi reusable rocket company aiming to fly interplanetary missions that have never been achieved before? Going from “no flight previous of the booster to 2 where we are not far from orbit” is serious progress!

RIP B-1058-19. Well done, old friend. You've earned your rest.
  • @jamesp13152
First I've heard of losing B1058. 😪. Watched it land.
  • @We_the_People_2A
If they’re not tying them down after landing, they’re lucky this is the first one they lost.

Another awesome episode, thankyou. I especially enjoyed the vision of the booster shifting on the drone ship!
