This is just one example of the many things you can do with what I think is the most useful accessory that you can make for your table saw. This is an L fence, or pattern fence.

I really like these videos, the format of: this is what it is, how it works, & why is good. Anyone that will use this will have the skills to make one, and we don't need another 20 minutes of someone demonstrating how they can cut wood. This is helpful, useful, to the point and I gets my genuine respect.
  • @lesblack413
Just realised, it will also be good to cut panels that have to be slightly off square in order to fit the cabinet carcase. What a magnificant idea. Cheers and thanks again!!
  • @nitePhyyre
I think it'd be helpful to give some ideas as why or when we'd want to use this over a mitre guage or a crosscut sled.
  • @disklamer
I love the simplicity, I love how the indication and stopblock go on the workpiece which makes it ridiculously easy to set, and how this makes operations about 100x more safe and predictable. I would be tempted to make this out of steel, height adjustable and with a 2' overhang, replace the function of the fence altogether. Oh and a 90° crossbar on the stopblock is probably helpful to keep things true. Add a 45° for good measure.
  • @Toyotajunkie
I think (for me personally) that would come in handy more for larger pieces/longer cuts that would not fit on my sled. Thanks for relaying a cool idea as usual!
  • Thanks. I've been using the L-fence for many years. It is one of the best jigs ever, especially for tapers, angle cuts & template cutting. Bob VanDyke has a great video of his and the ways he uses it.
  • It's not the first time that I saw the the use of an L-fence, but the combination with the MDF-sandpaper guide is great. Also the window for removing the off-cuts is a good idea.
  • Great jig/idea.Could also be used to cut cupped or bowed pieces to get a straight edge.
  • @wcogswe
This would also be a great way to do thin-strip cutting.
  • I look forward to seeing other uses for this device because so far, it seems like a complicated miter gauge. I have utmost trust that you will show additional awesome uses for this L fence.
  • It's ok to cut into the L-fence, especially for bevel cuts because it can help to control the offcuts. Also, the L-fence is great for pattern cutting of many shapes.

I like using the Microjig Matchfit clamps with corresponding dovetail slot on the vertical part. Gives more latitude in positioning the height of the horizontal part. Also placing the horizontal approximately 1/3 up the height of the vertical piece gives a "low side/high side" arrangement to better adjust for the thickness of your workpiece by flipping the L-fence over as needed.
  • @csimet
I really like your tips... almost always simple and explained in short videos. Question about this tip... what is the advantage of this jig over using a crosscut sled (other than if the part exceeds the width of the sled's capacity)?
  • I've seen this before but a refresher is a good thing. Thank you for sharing. Have a great day and stay safe.
  • @beerymr
Bob Van Dyke wrote an exceptional article for FineWoodworking on the use of an L-fence…and included plans for building a very flexible version
  • Just wanted to say thank you. Your videos have always been so helpful, but as late you've upped your game. Good on you!

I like this design. I have seen many L fences, but kudos for making a compact one. It helps with storage
