We pay a visit to Ed Smith at Five Star Engines to assess a rebuild of a late 30's engine block. Not every engine shop has the special equipment to do them, and having the right parts once the machining is done is a special problem. Discussion includes the heads, dual distributor, 2 water pumps and more. JB Donaldson leading the restoration.

  • I can't believe that this channel doesn't have tens of thousands of subscribers, and this video an exponentially more amount of views. So well done, subject matter to the 100th percentile, a gearhead's paradise. New subscriber, after having the algorithm bring me back to your content .. .. on a previously viewed Zephyr video. Unbelievable. 83 subscribers ??? This world is indeed sh*t !!! I am obviously not a viral YouTuber account fan. I enjoy learning more than what I have had previous. Historical content, motivations for whys and how's, and above all else .. context of progress. Throw that in .. with my love of all things mechanical, hot rod & custom, & glorious auto manufacturing golden years .. .. and screeeeeeeech', boom, bam .. .. HERE I AM !!!! I LOVE THIS SH*T !!! Thank you so much for all of your endeavors, and most of all .. sharing it with us. Hope you're on other forums, like Ford Barn, the H.A.M.B., and AACA. If so, share your filmed content YouTube channel links there, and any associated social media like FB, & IG. Also .. if on other social media and forums .. .. SHARE THOSE LINKS HERE, on your YouTube video descriptions. You deserve hundreds of thousands of subscribers and views. MERRY CHRISTMAS, HAPPY NEW YEAR, AND GOD BLESS YOU & ALL YOU LOVE !!!
  • That old fella with the band aid was not afraid of hard labor during his life judging from the scars on his arms. In any event, it's good to see that there are people who are saving these old engines.

A 38 zephyr is one of those cars , that looks fast just sitting still. 🕶️

8:09 The Mopar 218 and 230 had that. They called it a water distribution tube. Keeping it in good shape was a must, you would burn valves if you didn't.

You guys look younger in the newer videos than this one! (This vid is 3 yr old at time of comment). While this sounds like a mean joke, I am glad that you good are taking care of yourselves. So I do not mean this as a joke. I am a new viewer of this channel, & I hope that you all can share even more knowledge with us for a long long time!

Starting at 7:10, talking about speed, I remember back in the mid 1950s when the expression "going like 60" was still common...

It was good to see no visual cracks on the block ------ let's hope there are none that we can't see that will kill the block ------ maybe there will be more on what and how the block is set up for a C4 Transmission ------- the machining work ----- that would be interesting in knowing what had to be done to accept that trans.------- Thank You for bringing us along ----------------- Rodney

I was told the original transmission for that engine is about as rare as it gets. The first synchronized transmission

My father had a Packard 2door 1930, with the 12 in it (painted red, on red, with candy apple pinstripes) Was that a v12 or a straight 12? I don't remember but the car was so long it could be either by the looks of it. The sound was wonderful and the car drove better (to me, anyway,) than his 28ish Rolls-Royce and sounded in a different league. It won grand national best closed car in 1970. I love 12 cylinder engines. That Packard had Crazy low end power ( if you were not careful you could spin the tires) and the car easily went 80mph. What a beauty.
  • @StlJimmy
I love those engines. What is the ballpark figure to rebuild it?
  • @sandasturner9529
This v12 is rebuildable. Judging bybhow the outside looks. Nay need to fet it bored out though.
