Note from the devs: "This is Sonic Forces Overclocked, a mod that totally transforms the original Sonic Forces into an entirely new experience!

The mod’s central aim is to introduce new fully thought-out levels, taking advantage of new obstacles and mechanics to create fresh and exciting levels. The stages have been entirely overhauled with brand new level design, taking more cues from other 3D Sonic titles such as Unleashed and Generations to provide a much more fleshed-out experience with Forces.

These levels are also accompanied with new visuals, set pieces and an entirely new original soundtrack!

The story of the mod takes place a few months after Eggman’s defeat at the end of the original game.
Infinite and Neo Metal Sonic have harnessed the power of the now 'Overclocked’ Phantom Ruby, bending reality to their will to forge a new army from the ashes of the Eggman Empire.
With the world in peril once again, Sonic and the Resistance must reunite to stop the two villains’ Phantom Army, and put an end to the power that threatens their world.
There is an additional 'Episode Metal' prequel story that can be accessed via the main menu in which the story of Metal Sonic's rise to power can be found."

  • Samprocrastinates brought this thought up: “imagine the higher-ups at sega just looking at their sales charts, and seeing the bump in sales for sonic forces, they’d be so confused!”
  • @comicfan1324
I just have to say, I love the thematic element of teamwork in this by having two villains team, up in an attempt to “show the world what we can do“ but unlike the heroes, who are genuinely trusting and relying on one another to do their part, the villains clearly don’t work well together, as their partnership feels less genuine, and more of just a means to an end.

May be a little cheesy, but I think it was a nice touch to mirror how the tagteam mechanic worked narratively. Besides, sonics, whole thing is the opposite of sonic, so this feels very unbranded for him to see how Sonic works with others, tries copying that strategy, but misses the point of teamwork.

This is my new synopsis for Sonic's plot. Thank you.

6:33 Eggman sends the avatar from null space to the death egg (which is explained in the final cutscene).

6:47 The avatar was mad at sonic because he started a fight with Neo and Infinite.

Little fact abt the mod: this isn’t the finished version. Due to covid, they couldn’t finish it, so they held a poll on their discord to the fans to either:
leave it how it was at that point
Finish it, but make it drastically shorter.
The fans chose for the finished but shorter option, and this dlc is what that was. From what I know, there was a metropolis level planned, an aqua road remake, a null space level, which is why that part with the avatar felt weird, another chemical plant level and more. In general every level except for the classic sonic levels.

Edit: Just remembered the name of that chemical plant level, it was meant to be Network terminal, but changed into the scale of overclocked, kinda like fright frenzy, but more distorted.

overclocked became one of my favorite 3d sonic experiences thus far in about the course of one day

This was a really impressive mod. It takes the handful of things that objectively work in Sonic Forces (the environments, atmosphere, and general premise) and build upon it to make a great sequel story.

I will say though, I wish there was just one or two more things . Obviously, I’m not demanding these as honestly, the fact, a fan mod can be this expensive as it is, is super impressive.

However, I remember during the story tales randomly put on his armor from Lost World. When they made a big deal about him arriving, I thought he was going to become playable (perhaps he could be skinned over Classic Sonic and have a level where you have to reach the computer room; and then maybe if possible, could end with an endgame touch scene where he uses his gun arm to destroy the computer after taking the information he needs?) Obviously it doesn’t subtract from the mod that Tails isn’t playable, I think it would’ve been really neat if that was included.

Also, I think it would’ve been nice if Episode Metal had a boss fight. The level featured a bunch of rogue, glitching badniks, so they could’ve reused the AI from Zavok’s fight to make you fight a giant Buzz Bomber pilot by the Egg Robo. Or if you want more thematic purpose, maybe when he initially tries approaching the phantom. Ruby, it shoots off an energy blast, and a copy of Metal Sonic is created. Throughout the entire fight, the phantom clone is berating, metal sonic, calling him “An imposter; A wannabe; not worthy to be the real sonic, he’s just an Aaron boy for the Doctor.” This would give him that little bit more of a realization moment and encourage him to overthrow Eggman.

Again, I’m not asking for any of us, what we have is already more than enough, and I don’t have the same expectations I would for an official release. I’m just saying, I think these elements would’ve been pretty cool and could’ve expanded the narrative.

i am surprised sonic forces is making a comeback.
  • @op_magee
The best part about this was hearing the VAs from Adrenaline Dubs! If you haven't seen them I highly recommend checking out their content, they do fan dubs of both the IDW and Archie comics, more people need to see their stuff!!
  • If one looks hard enough, there is obvious moments of unfinished concepts, but I admire the devs’ attempts to still make it cohesive enough. (Eggman outright stating he’s the reason for the Rookies’ escape from Null Space comes to mind.) It is, ultimately, unfortunate, but given it’s a fan mod with years of dedication, it’s easy to overlook personally.

12:46 Apparently there was a lot of in-game mechanics that the mod devs also just could not get around without completely recreating the game from the ground up. Even having to split up stages (namely the Mystic Forest) because apparently Forces has stage limiters. They talk about it on AdrenalineDubs’ stream of the game if you’re curious, but essentially the game itself enforced the shorter stages. I’m just thankful for what we did get.

Glad you enjoyed it! This mod certainly deserves the praise and I completely agree with you on the comic-style cutscenes being an awesome decision. It’s also great because it lets fan artists in the community shine! Between that, the animations, the acting, the coding, and the music, it’s as if every type of fancreation worked together on this project and that’s pretty incredible.

    Here's to 2024 Pup, hope you hit 100K 👍
  • @SCORP1ONF1RE
Sonic fans: Try Spark the Electric Jester 3.

Imo it's the best 3D Sonic ever made.
  • @Jabronie1164
Forces genuinely gave me a headache both times I've played it. The avatar was a part I did enjoy as well as shadow's dlc. That being said, I may genuinely give this a shot. I've been curious about it since I saw the chemical plant teaser. (Showing chaotix and trains for the level) Seeing that they did some really cool and interesting stuff, like starlight to Ash hill, I'm a bit excited.

Unrelated, I gotta ask pup. Do you think you'll cover / review the project Shadow fan film? I've seen barely anyone talk about it and just watched it two days ago. It blew me away, and I was surprised it flew under my radar.
  • @loldude118
4:20 "Seals Dr. Robotnik in cyberspace."

This single sentence is entirely wrong.
  • You know what they say: fans/mods will fix it. While flawed on some aspects (as to be expected from a fan project with limited budget), this is a real improvement over the original with a lot of stronger elements and real heart put into it !
  • Biggest W of the mod is that they cut Classic Sonic entirely. They could have repurposed him for another character but they decided not to and I respect it. They focused in on what was their strongest aspects and didn't bother including Sega's weakest aspect at all.
  • @ArtHollow
Just couldn't keep the New York out of Sonic at the end there, I see. I love these fun things you do for your Patreon plugs and Patron name reads.
Glad to see you cover this awesome mod, Pup, and your review has not disappointed at all. Keep up the great work, I hope 2024 is treating you well so far.
  • @JuliRocket
This was my first ever sonic game and I’m glad that mod devs made it not just good in my heart, but also in terms of gameplay. Sonic forces is special to me and I’m happy people are making it actually really fun.
