One of the greatest opening scenes in all cinematic history. Ridley Scott is a bloody genius.

How Sir Ridley can go from such perfect heights of cinematic story telling to the depths of Nepoleon I will never understand.

I was one of the Roman soldier extras in this part of the film . Amazing experience

The shot of the dog jumping through the flames into battle is bad ass.

"People should know when they are conquered...." "Would you Quintus? Would I?" Such a simple yet profound statement that humanized their foes and revealed that Maximus understood that in reality there was truly no difference between them, just the circumstances they found themselves in....

This is 100 percent proof why you do not make a sequel.... you cant beat this,

One of the best pre-battle speeches. He mentions family as a great motivator to carry out their duties, not hollow concepts. That "riding alone, with the sun in your face" joke not only serves to relieve some of the pre-battle nerves, it's also a comforting reminder about afterlife. And, finally..."what we do in life, echoes in eternity"...all that delivered with the strong voice & charisma of a general, who despite his rank, is a "primus inter pares", addresses his troops as "fratres" and leads them from the front... This particular speech scene will always send shivers down my spine and make me stand straighter

I like the opening of this scene. You can tell Maximus is beloved by the men, Commodus was not just jealous of the respect he commanded, but he also knew he would never be able to become emperor without full control of the military - Maximus, while an honorable man, was a threat to Commodus's ascension to power simply because Maximus owned their hearts and minds.

I imagine this is the greatest depiction of how the Roman army battled. Brutal.
  • The opening scene of this movie is really good. It shows the romans strong fighting as one cohesive unit instead of breaking and suddenly fighting one on one and throwing away the scutum... Pullo GET BACK IN FORMATION.

One of the best battle scenes in movie history. Watched it wide screen 📺 UHD dolby surround, I felt like the arrows were passing by my head. The cavalry charge is so gripping, one has the feeling that you are riding with them through the trees. Unforgettably electrifying!!

“STAY WITH MEEEE!!!” “What we do in life, echoes in eternity.” How can you not want to fight for Maximus with speeches like the one he just gave?

6:34 After decades I've just noticed that there's a barbarian extra smiling as he walks away from the Roman line. 😆
