Separation of the plate from the block may allow coolant and oil to mix in the engine. Proper repair of water pump should include replacing timing cover gasket, oil pan gasket, crank seal, and fuel pump gasket. Lightly driven so I’m testing my luck but will keep complete gasket set on hand for a later time if needed. 5 Liter 307 A Olds engine ~30K mi same for 350 5.7 Liter of this era.

The last time did a water pump installation on my Oldsmobile 307 V8... I went ahead and removed the harmonic balancer and removed the timing plate and discovered I had a worn out timing chain with worn nylon timing gears with broken teeth. I was glad I checked what was behind the plate... because I was able to replace the worn out timing chain and gears with brand new ones & prevent any further damage that the worn timing chain could had done to the engine.
