Rich Robinson and Marc Ford were the Black Crowes’ Ronnie and Keith during the peak of the band’s historic run. Back together in the newly formed The Magpie Salute, Robinson and Ford remain a two-guitar snarling attack that grooves hard with tube-driven tone and show us their wares before a gig at Nashville’s Marathon Music Works.

Robinson’s beloved 1968 Gibson Les Paul goldtop was nearly destroyed in Hurricane Sandy. Now totally restored thanks to the loving people at RS Guitarworks, Robinson maintains that the guitar sounds better than ever. This guitar is strung with D’Addario EXL 140 (.010–.052) strings.

Ford spends the majority of the set on his two Asher guitars. Here is his Asher Electro-Sonic goldtop. The string-through-body design sports Novak pickups, CTS pots, Emerson Bumblebee tone caps, and a TonePros bridge.

I always have been a Black Crowes fan and I was saddened by the news that they had split up but I'm stoked about the Magpie Salute because it put Rich and Marc back together on stage that that line up to me was the ultimate Black Crowes guitar line up.

Great video, great gear, and two of the best guitar players you will ever see. I saw the Magpie Salute live in 2017 and they absolutely blew me away. Their guitars and amps just have tone for days and they are both great players that just want to make the best music they can. That sweet, creamy distortion is what Marc has going and when he turns up the tone just blooms and envelopes you. Quite hard to put into words. I could listen to these guys play for hours and hours. Thanks PG and John for bringing all of these great rig rundowns to us. Keep them coming!

I'm so glad they did one of these. I saw The Magpie Salute in Indy and the show was awesome. Got to talk to John Hogg after the gig for a while but missed out on bugging Rich for anything more than a handshake and Marc to talk a little gear. Thanks!

  • Marc, David ad I use to battle for guitars on the racks at Rockit Music in Brea a few years back. I had the ability to visit more often and I would snatch a guitar up in a heartbeat if it had the sound we guitarists all Love. Fun Times.
  • @evankeal
I love that pedal, ep, bi amp, mastermind rig (first interview) . For me this is one of the few rigs I could see myself understanding and liking he sounds of.
  • Love Marc Ford! But I'm giving a huge shout out to Rich. Killer tone and such a riff monster and songwriter 👊😎
