1996 Chevrolet Impala Drift at Kil-Kare Raceway - Assetto Corsa

I get bored . . . often . . . so I decided to try modding a car that I've always enjoyed seeing slide. Though typically, in movies and in videos, you really only see these "Turtle Body" cars doing donuts or basic power slides around corners. Never do they really do any "traditional" drifting so I figured we'd fix that today!

This car is mostly stock, believe it or not! It's got bone stock suspension, slightly shorter gears (basically a transmission swap), and a final drive ratio of 3.73, up from 3.42. Whether or not 3.73s were made that can fit this vehicle is unknown to me, LOL! I also went ahead and supercharged the V8 which brought us up from a fairly wimpy 238hp (unfathomable how we Americans manage to get so few horsepowers out of so much engine) up to a rather STOUT 417whp. Again, not sure how feasible or practical that kind of power is to get from the LT1/LT4 engines, but looking around on forums, ~400hp seems to be pretty mid for these, so that's what I went with. I also went with supercharging as opposed to turbocharging as I figured that'd be way more fun and responsive. And it is!

Other than that, she's had the steering rack limiters removed. This is a simple modification often done on real road cars used for drifting where you remove the polyurethane washers at either end of the rack to allow for slightly more steering angle at the limits. I've done this on my Bullitt and on my Drift Taxi so I figured I'd do it here as well. This gives a BIT more control at the extremes of the drift angle without being absurd with custom knuckles or anything silly like that. It's also a "free" modification where it only costs about 20 minutes of your day! So there ya go, DAdams Drift Top Tip!

So yeah, she's about as stock as you'd want for a car you plan to take to grassroots drift events. She's also a blast to drive. A few more tweaks and she'll be ready for a production video where I'll talk more about the sources of the car, the sounds and where to download my modification of it.

Take care!
