I didn't have to go far for these clips but it took weeks to capture.
It's on my lanai right outside my desk window. I have a small mirror set up so I can see the gecko approach the nest while working at my desk.

The gecko made numerous attempts only to be driven away by the most aggressive wasp.
This small nest has been on my lanai for over a year now. We coexist quite well.
They never bother me.
The nest hasn't grown any larger than it was a year ago and now I know one of the reasons why.

I believe these are Paper wasps.

The first clip was shot in early evening low-light conditions. 6400 iso.
I had a lume cube set and ready to go but I was afraid of trying to turn it on and spooking the gecko.
Once it made its attack I could turn the lume cube light on.

The second clip was shot the following morning in better light.

With each attack, I tried to follow it but the gecko quickly disappeared behind stuff.
I didn't even have time to refocus at the end of the first clip before it vanished.

You hear what I was hearing.
It's an urban setting with construction noise nearby. You'd think I lived in NY City. The loud birds in the first clip are Mina birds settling in for the night in a nearby tree.

I used the Panasonic GH5 and the Leica 100-400mm lens. 4k 60fps.
The audio is directly from the camera's built-in mic.

The battle between the geckos and the wasp nest goes on daily right outside my window. I have several clips where they stalk them for 10 - 20 minutes only to be driven away. In the end, the wasps don't stand a chance as the geckos are fierce predators.

get em boy! get em! I like the audience of birds cheering the gecko on, in the first half.
  • The defense posture of that wasp in the beginning! Wings spread out and that stare down! That gecko just waiting for the moment to sneak attack.

Omg i did not expect it to jump down after the one that fell 🤣🤣🤣

It's over... I have the high ground.
  • Thank you for posting! A community of wasps are building outside my door, which is making me nervous. I also have a new little gecko buddy showing up at night, hanging around their nests which prompted me to google just what a gecko can do to a nest. Interesting!

Beautiful Gecko, it is pretty game to attack a wasp, hopefully it wont get nailed by it. Love the footage!

It’s funny how these animals are observing the situation very tactical and smart

Larry Wasp: “Hey bob, you seen Jerry? He was just checking round the back of the nest a second ago and now he’s gone. Did you send him out for snacks?” Bob Wasp: “Uh no, I’ve been keeping my eyes on that dinosaur just above the nes….” Larry wasp: “ Bob? Bob..!?! Wtf! Uh… guys… hey LEON! BUZZ! GUYS! We’re under attack! Oh damn LEOoon! Crap! BUZZ Grab the kids, we need to move NO………….” BUZZ wasp: “Larry I got my jaws full, can you get the other one?….. Larry? Wtf did he fly off already? Didn’t even wait for me and I can’t carry everything! FLOYD Gecko: “ those wasps sure fill you up but the heartburn is a killer. I should just stick to cockroaches.”
  • I imagine the current eruption has your hiking limited. At the rate it's going I'm wondering if it's going to completely fill the caldera and over flow, or we end up with another collapse.

thanks so much. this is so fascinating. the geckos are adorable. but wasps are really scary - bees aren’t, but they are. no matter what the genus of predator the animal is, they all have the same technique. sneak up little by little and stay still to watch - then pounce or grab. e.g. cats 🐆, foxes 🦊 , lizards 🦎, spiders🕷🕸, hawks 🦅, etc. l live in New York and l really miss living with nature. Parks just aren’t the same. 😿😾 🌷🌿🌼🌱🌷🦋🦆🐞🕊🌲🍃🍂🌻
