Hashimoto's Flare Up TRIGGERS (Avoid These Like The Plague)

These are the most common causes of a Hashimoto's flare up. What is a Hashimoto's flare up? Flare ups are defined as an abrupt worsening in your thyroid or Hashimoto's symptoms.

These flare ups are triggered by certain factors which can be managed. If you can find the source of your flare up then you can identify and target your treatment.

When we talk about flare ups and Hashimoto's we are mostly focusing on the impact that these triggers have on your immune system.

Hashimoto's is both a thyroid condition as well as an immune condition and an imbalance in immune function is what usually leads to a flare up.

Having said that it's also important to understand that flare ups often can and do impact thyroid function. When your thyroid gland is inflamed from your immune system it will almost always have some impact on how well your thyroid gland can produce thyroid hormone.

If your thyroid gland doesn't product enough thyroid hormone during your flare then you may experience hypothyroid symptoms. If your thyroid produces too much hormone during your flare then you may experience hyperthyroid symptoms.

While pretty much any condition that impacts your immune system can trigger a Hashimoto's flare up, these are the most common triggers based on my own experience:

#1. diet
Especially gluten, dairy, and soy.
#2. Stress (emotional or physical)
#3. Viral infections
Especially EBV and CMV.
#4. Nutrient deficiencies
Especially iodine, zinc, selenium, magnesium, and vitamin d deficiencies.
#5. Bacterial infections
Especially H. pylori which is a known pathogen that leads to stomach ulcers.
#6. Lack of sleep + lack of exercise
#7. Parasites
#8. Exposure to endocrine disrupting chemicals
#9. Increased intestinal permeability (leaky gut)

Finally, I have found a doctor that explains in detail what is going on with me. I am a 69 y.o. widow, retired teacher. About 5 years ago, I was diagnosed with Hashimoto's, but no info was given to me other than it was determined to be the cause of my previously diagnosed Hypothyroidism and I have been on Levothyroxine for 10 years. I threw caution to the wind 4 days ago and ate cereal with whole milk, and ate a brownie, chocolate chip cookie, chicken sandwich, fries and a frozen coffee. So now for the past two days, my fatigue and sleepiness has been debilitating to the point that I simply cannot function. Have spent the past two days lying on the couch and sleeping and feeling horrible. I tried to make myself get up and be productive. I simply could not stay standing up or function. I guess this is what is called a flare up. Sad. I did it to myself. Going back on my gluten-free, soy-free and dairy-free diet long-term. I also suspect that I may have Sjogren's Syndrome as I have most of the symptoms. Have subscribed and am looking forward to learning how to manage my Hashimoto's. Thank you.
  • A stressful situation and a trigger for me is contradictory advice about the illness, different advice on what is the most important things to consider when having Hashimotos. It is so confusing to trying to figure out which advice to prioritize, when having brain fog and other cognitive dysfunctions that feels like having dementia. I read and listen to youtube videos, then forget it all, even if I have rehearsed the advice over and over again. I am happy for beeing somewhat "clear" in m head today to express my feelings and thoughts about having hashimotos, and how it affects me. I got informed years ago about my thyorid dysfunction. But only recently, when a nurse told me to read my own journal (when I called the healthcenter, beacuse of fatigue). I could read about thyroid toxication and that I have had and that I was given Hashimotos diagnosis in 2014. So I have not been informed about having Hashimotos and a this toxication. I found this out recently, and I have just done my regual thyroid tests for years. And adjusting the dosage a bit now and then. What I want to say, is that there should be guidelines and information given to you, when you get an illness or diagnosis. So that you know what you are dealing with, and then what you actually can do to get more healthy. It seems like there is no consensus. Some say that the number one thing you must avoid is gluten, and then again others say the number one most important thing to avoid is sugar. All the vagueness and different advice becomes a nightmare after years of brainfog and cognitive dysfunction. It feels like you can grasp the situation, but soon enough you forget about the advice, or most likely are too fatigued to do any improvment in you life to become healthier. Just trying to make it through the day.

Stopped eating gluten in 2013. Never eat soy and check for soy ingredients. When I stopped gluten, I also stopped dairy, I added dairy back a couple of years ago, but very limited. My only issues recently has been with the changes with NDT meds. The Nature Throid changes were disastrous for me. I changed to NP and it had been ok.

I had hashimoto's under control for four years, even during pregnancy. But, moved to a new home (leading to lots of takeout, even though it's kind of 'healthy' and a lack of routine and exercise), had an audit at work, Thanksgiving at inlaws with a 14 hour travel with a 1 year old, Christmas with my family which is super stressful, and strep throat and a viral infection in the last month, and my entire body is screaming at me, in pain, my joints hurt, and I am exhausted. I forgot how bad it feels to have active hashimoto, and it truly sucks. Thanks for helping me better understand what is going on and how to get back on track.

I’m dealing with major inflammation right now, and it’s either an EBV flare up or a Hashis flare up. I have both. But what’s interesting is, it happened right after I got over Covid. I’m suspecting the virus caused my flare up. So, I’m currently being super careful to avoid any foods that cause inflammation, doing light exercise, and resting.

nailed whats happening with me right now,i have autoimmune pernicious annemia to ,happy days ,mostly stress and a bit of all the bad stuff you mentioned but rest and a bit of tlc will get me ok again, found out gluten was a major culprit recently i am healing so fast it drops my vitamins so its a struggle to keep levels etc...

My opinion... treat the symptoms not the numbers. No Dr. would write a script for thyroid meds because my numbers don’t fall in “the range”. I found a Dr. who allowed me to try a low does & I have never felt better. I am now transitioning away from gluten & eating a more clean diet. I do a few juice cleanses for fast natural vitamins. I had a run in with covid before I started thyroid meds & covid stripped me of anything I had left after fighting a thyroid storm for a year. It almost killed me. I know for a fact if I was taking thyroid meds I would have had more strength to fight covid. If you have a goiter, zero energy, anxiety, depression, memory issues on & on YOU NEED hormone treatment in the form of medication period! Your thyroid is fighting for survival & it’s not winning & never will. It’s under attack by the greatest military in nature “the human immune system” ! What caused this auto immune disease? Our food sources! Gluten! Man made foods! Modified foods! Pesticides! Even the toxic cleaning products & toxic lotions, soaps , makeup that we put on our bodies. Vitamins are not a natural source of nutrients & some don’t even absorb into our bodies as needed & some are made with harsh ingredients that cause all sorts of trouble. Everything we need is in natural untreated foods. Organic & grass fed. But foods alone can not turn over this auto immune disease you need the hormone that your thyroid needs to fight. Don’t wait until you need a thyroid biopsy or the “right range”. If you wait until the “range” it’s to late & the disease has pretty much crushed the thyroid gland & that’s at the point of no return & complete defeat & the yo-yo of what dose will work & testing numbers always on & on. Don’t wait ! And run from gluten & processed crap . It’s hard I know. Little steps everyday makes a huge difference.

  • @bettywhill
Just found out I have hypothyroidism. Looking back at my lab tests TSH was normal up till 2021. Starting 2022 my mom’s dementia worsened and I became her full time caregiver. My TSH went up to 3.65 September 2022. Test last week TSH was 3.97. Getting COVID in January didn’t help either. No wonder I’m always tired and stressed out.

What’s the longest time it’s taken (that you’ve seen) for a patient to successfully put Hashimoto’s into “remission”? Thank you for your videos! 🙏
  • What exactly is a Hashimoto flare. My thyroid levels are checked annually and good. Do I need to have my thyroid autoantibodies checked. Have not had them checked since medicated to good thyroid levels.
