Peterbilt 389's trying to look like 379's and knowing the difference

Published 2023-05-22
There is a trend with a lot of owners of 389's making their trucks look like 379's. Some of them have caught me off guard and had me naming the wrong model. After being corrected a number of times I decided that it was time to dig a little deeper into this trend. Here are the differences that I found to help others. In this video I will also show Cory Johnston's amazing 389 Peterbilt that might catch you off guard and make you think it is a 379.

Here is Part one of the Cory Johnston Build from Largecarmag.    • Vlog #1 The build of Cory Johnston's ...

The slanted windows started on the 05 379 when they converted to a whole window and the rounded grill was already in the 379 SH. I own a 379 SH and it has the same grill as the 389 has

My old 2002 379 had the mirrors attached to the doors then for 2003 they were on the A pillars and had window vents
  • A very beautiful truck for sure. Keep her clean an polished. I wish I could get one but in this day an time fuel mileage is profit.
  • Beat way to check is the sound/seeing if it’s got a dpf lol quick way of telling you if it’s a 379 or not
  • OH YEAH LOOK AT 👀👀 THE FRONT FENDERS GURDS THIN ONE. OR 389's. Thick ones 379 and Doors 06 is THE angle DOWN"& 379 CROWN 👑 ON 389 GRILL FOESHOW 10-4 😅

The 389 custom you show us in the video I saw that truck in York PA, or maybe one very similar

The bottom of the window was only straight on a 2005 on 06-07 379 were slanted like the 389 doors

The main way I tell the difference between a 389 and a 379 is the hood. I notice the 389 hoods look wider than the 379.
  • I had an 07 and I did had a little slope on my windows I think the give away is the hood
  • Yeah, there are many obvious details that are different on 359's, 379's, and 389's, but only one who really has a love for these trucks will know the difference. No different than the 378 and 379 short hood, which took me a while to remember which was which. As far as a 388 and a 389 short hood, they are both one in the same, now! They changed the 388 to a 389 short hood, so there is no issue there! Personally, I hate short hoods due to the short turning radius, whether it be a 378, 379SH, or 389SH. I hate all three, even though I've driven em all except the 378! Give me a 379exhd or a 389exhd, and I'm happy!

Pete 379 did have a slight slope to the bottom of the side window for the last couple of years or so when Peterbilt ditched the vent window, I drove a 2006 379 ext hood like that for a little over a year and the mirror was on the pillar instead of the door on that 2006. I could be wrong but I don't think the 389 came out till the 379 ended its production run but that truck that you said was a 2000 389 Glider looked like a 379 short/standard hood which did have a slight downward slope where the 379 extended nose did not. Just my thoughts, let me know what you find upon further research.

You forgot the cow panel. On 389 it's curved, and 379 straight
