Selecting the best mutual funds to achieve long-term financial goals remains a challenging task for investors. Russel Kinnel, Director of Manager Research for Morningstar, has dedicated nearly three decades to this endeavor. He oversees Morningstar's North American Morningstar analyst ratings committees, responsible for vetting the prestigious Morningstar medalist ratings frequently cited in the financial world.

Kinnel's extensive experience analyzing various fund types and prominent fund families has led him to publish two highly impactful articles.

One is the annual "The Thrilling" fund list, which carefully selects 25 to 50 funds from a vast universe of 15,000 fund share classes based on strict criteria. Additionally, Kinnel shares his review of the top ten holdings in his personal portfolio, some of which may not be members of this year's "Thrilling 33" fund list.

Join us to understand the rigorous selection process for "The Thrilling 33" and gain valuable insights into Kinnel's top personal holdings.

Hi Consuelo ... I just want to thank you for all your great interviews over the last 10 years I have been following you. I am a fan of webcasts and you are part of my trifecta play, along with the DoubleLine team and Dave Rosenberg. I have learned a lot, for which I am very grateful.
  • So where do we find the Thrilling 33? I am a Morningstar subscriber, but I can't find it on their website. Maybe I need to upgrade my subscription?

The subject of this interview is "mutual funds," without distinguishing--at the outset--between expensive, actively managed funds and inexpensive, passively managed funds. I don’t believe a discussion of mostly active funds should share in the aura of Jack Bogle’s creation of Vanguard’s cost-saving index funds.

I don't like pointing this out but nothing new here. 1. Management fees or expenses do make a difference and should be avoided. 2. Diversification is good, so invest in a total market index fund. (VTSAX is my personal favorite.) 3. Put 20-30% in an international fund if that makes you feel good. 4. Have some money set aside for an emergency. 5. Stay the course. Follow these simple steps and you will most certainly have a better result than 99% of the others that don't.

To Wealthtrack, you may as well turn off comments. All you get are trolls

S&P SPIVA reports consistently prove that the performance of low cost index funds is better than 85% of active funds over 20 year periods. Where is the data to show that this guy can consistently select the needles in the haystack?

of course an index fund has low expenses because there is no one managing the fund, it is just the index...also an index fund will never outperform the market because it will duplicate the market...if you want mediocrity then buy an index...expenses are not relevant when you are comparing returns of funds as return/performance is after expenses...there are some very special boutique mutual funds, not known by general public, that outperform the index funds and the lower expense funds...they tend to be non diversified funds with low asset base and yes the expenses are higher but long term performance is much better then the well known funds...do the work and you can find them but not through the normal channels...
