Heritage day, Telegraph Station Alice Springs 2022

Telegraph Station at Alice Springs, central Australia celebrating 150 years since the completion of the overland telegraph line connecting Australia to Europe. 36,000 telegraph poles carried a single telegraph wire through the centre of Australia with many repeater stations set up to rebroadcast the telephone signal via Morse code. The telegraph station at Alice Springs was approximately the centre of the Australian continent.

  • That looks like a great day out Ian. I hope you are well :) Good to see the old radio sets they used to use, I'm interested in anything like that. I believe they still do use HF radio in the outback, but no doubt all encrypted nowadays. Back in June this year I was down in Cornwall and visited the Porthcurno telegraph museum there - it's the place where the undersea cables used to come in. In fact you can still see the remains of some of them on the beach. The museum is a fantastic place, full of the old equipment and displays showing the history and development and how it all worked.
