The biggest difference between the two is actually that the Try Guys didn't try to emotionally manipulate, if you will, their audience in the way Watcher did. The Try Guys were very honest and from the start decided "our content will still get posted on YouTube for free, just later". I think that's very smart, since they're getting the money from fans that want the content faster and uncensored while fans who don't care about wait times and all, only enjoy the content they put out, and can't pay for a (or another) streaming service can still watch. I think it's well done.
  • I agree it's very different given the size of their catalogue. Another thing is that the Try Guys didn't remove their content from YT nor implied that "everyone can afford to spare 5 USD". Just as you mentioned. It's VERY different.

I saw someone with an interesting conspiracy theory on reddit: Watcher Boys heard what the try guys were planning, and tried to copy them as fast as possible to announce their service before them. Thats why it was so poorly done compared to the try guys. In the podcast you hear Zach and Keith talk about how they consulted and sought out advice from Rhett & Link, Smosh (Anthony & Ian) and had lots of meetings with Sam Reich from Dropout. They have been working on this for a year+. Watcher boys mentioned no colleagues. It sounds to me that they talked to the guys about it and took the idea and ran 😂
  • If we’re continuing the comparison to dropout, what the try guys is doing is MUCH closer to what dropout does. They have multiple shows going, often posting multiple times a week, they have a larger cast, and they actually have a unique selling point (access to their live shows). Also, their reasons for switching to streaming is much much closer to dropout compared to watcher.

from their podcast, they have mentioned that they might be stopping pateron compeletly and focusing on the plaform solely and theres disocunt code for subscribing, ive been a long time fan for both watcher and try guys so i personally think try guys are way more transparent and honest about their situation and they have made it clear that they will still have 90% of their show on YT, only 2 exclusive show had been anncouced and it is a more mature content therefore wont do as well on YT

i recommend watching the tri pod episode about the second try streaming service. they answer many of your questions in that episode

I will admit, I was very worried when 2nd Try was announced, and I'm still not entirely sure how I feel about it as a whole, but the Try Guys definitely did a much better job with the announcement and set up than Watcher. Of course there are some flaws still to be addressed (I hadn't even considered Patreon acess until you mentioned it), but I think the guys are just overall more trusted to do good by their fans than Watcher. I think what really helps is that they have done large changes to their content in the past, as well as already endeavoured with pre-paid projects (like their live show, documentary, book etc.) so there's more reliablity that they'll get it right. Also, it definitely helps that they already had more new content to view when 2nd Try went live than Watcher, and they made it clear that old content would be staying up and new content would still be coming to YouTube. They made it clear there was no malice towards those who couldn't make the move with them and that old fans would still be able to view their content, whereas with Watcher there was this aspect of abandonment of their old fans who had supported them for years but now wouldn't be able to get past a pay wall anymore (initially).

Okay this is hilarious. How many comments said “it’s one thing if the try guys tried this, but watcher isn’t big enough” And they thought… okay guys this a GREAT time to tell you we were doing that anyways 🤣

The huge difference between Watcher and Try Guys is that the latter offer more of what their audience actually and vocally wants. They paid attention to the content and collaborators people love and are investing in this. There was no abrupt direction change or tone deafness, it's literally just the same Try Guys platform plus more content.

Others might have mentioned it already, but on the podcast they essentially positioned the streaming service as a better alternative to patreon--e.g., people are already willing to support them on patreon, but it's not a good platform for distributing video, so now they'll move away from patreon (probably) and replace it with this, and provide more tangible benefits on the new platform. And they were also very candid about the business behind the decision. They also mentioned reaching out to Dropout to get advice on how to approach building their platform, which is probably a big reason why their rollout has gone so much more smoothly.

As someone who was a Try Guys Patreon to support them after the Ned scandal and then quit it: Streaming Service makes way more sense. People on Patreon (like me) would constantly complain there just wasnt anything in there worth it. The lower tier was for the ad-free podcast and even then they'd forget to release it at the same time as the podcast on YouTube, or were delays. Higher levels had a random shirt (who wants that many shirts?) Sent out every so often and the shirts werent good and they sent out a ned-related shirt AFTER the scandal and they had to apologize cuz shipment had been pre-organized months in advance..... Etc. The Patreon was A MESS. Im much happier giving my money to this. PS: Zach mentioned on the pod about maybe creating a super cheap tier on Patreon for ppl that still want the ad-free pod and only care about that so it would make sense they rethink their entire Patreon strategy now that we dont have to support them there.

The try guys tried controversy! it failed 😨 😔
  • @haruwu9556
It's weird to see so many people talking about unsubscribing when it will remain basically the same? The exclusive shows are shows that wouldn't be able to go to YouTube anyway since they're mature content
  • @mai_komagata
i see these streaming services as not being materially different from patreon in terms of cost/content. I just wish more creators would do things like Nebula, i.e. form creator cooperatives instead of isolating themselves in one off services i need to remember to check.
  • @renatal.129
i genuinely think the only streaming i'm interested in is dropout, mainly bc most of the try guys content are just youtube videos, they aren't original enough for me to pay for another plataform (the only outlier that comes to mind recently is the cooking/baking series they do)
  • @rebekkahill4664
They made it clear the subscription isn't a greedy money grab, but a way of maintaining economic security whilst being able to create meaningful rather than algorithm tailored content. I've stopped watching a lot of their content in recent years because it seems very clickbaity. I'll not be paying for the subscription, but if it means some of their youtube videos are going to be better, i'm excited and ready to give their channel another go!
  • @7Nine7
Honestly, someone needs to make a deep dive into who is programming those subscription sites. There was a time we're almost every bigger youtuber had a tour (incl. The try guys) and through another yt, I realised it was thanks to a company who approached them (mostly on vid con) I have the feeling the same thing is happening now. Also it really reminds me of the time almost 20 years ago, when a lot of fanfiction writer made there own password secure ff site, since most ff websites started to implement much more censoring rules (disproportionately hitting lgbtq content). It made FF reading a hassle and thankfully, 'Archiv of our own' came about.
  • @lodeisho
TryGuys fan here. I'm grom a third world country with a disastrous conversion rate for our currency, so what they call affordable, for me is expensive as fuck. Still, if I'm ever in a good position financially (rn that's NOT the case haha) I might pay for a month every once in a while, and watch as much as I can.
  • @Rawrmuffin0
To me, I will only ever subscribe to dropout tv and maybe a few Patreon reactors that are posting content I enjoy but want to see uncut. Dropout is just too good of a deal. They have hundreds of hours of content , 10+ series through the years and so many cast and characters rotating. It’s one of the best internet streaming services imo
  • @user-xt8xs8ps5r
My guess would be we're in a mini youtube -> Streaming platform boom that will lead to consolidation, hopefully with creatives maintaining some control.
