Why the Jews? The Truth about Antisemitism

Published 2024-01-31
There is no denying the recent uptick in anti-semitism in the past year. Are we at fault? What can we do about it, and is there any chance for it to change?

Rabbi Yossy Goldman is Life Rabbi Emeritus of Sydenham Shul in Johannesburg and president of the South African Rabbinical Association. He is the author of From Where I Stand, on the weekly Torah readings, available from Ktav.com and Amazon.

  • I am Egyptian born in Egypt my father and grandfather and great grandfather was all Egyptian as soon as I came to America and I started learning about Christianity I started studying the Bible and miraculously I fell in love with with Israel with all the Jewish people and I consider them my brothers and sisters and I became advocate for the great nation and I became pro-Israel. When October 7 happened I decided to join the IDF …… the rest is classified. And there’s millions and millions of us around the world. 🌎❤️🇮🇱

I am a Christian who is obsessed with news of what's happening in Israel. I have 6 Israeli friendly, YouTube sites I monitor every night. I have a strong, unshakable love for Israel. I am absolutely stunned as to why so many people hate Israel. You have the most moral military on the planet. I pray for you multiple times a day.

As Jew who experienced antisemitism in different continents first hand , and could never comprehend it . I find the kindness of strangers a reason to help me breathe in times where it is so difficult !

I, like many commentators, am a Christian, but I feel fortunate to say I have wonderful Jewish friends. Strong and smart, intelligent and kind, I love them deeply. I have never understood the shameful antisemitism, and all who practice it should be embarrassed to walk the streets. May God create change in their hearts, and comfort the Jews.

I’m not Jewish or religious in any way, and never gave the issue of antisemitism much thought until seeing antisemitism everywhere after October 7th. I’ll always stand with the Jewish people now. What happened that day was pure primordial evil.
  • I would not be alive today if not for Jewish people. I love and will forever respect their charity and humanity. May all that is good be always with them I pray.❤

When I was at university in the 1980s, the GLBA (Gay Lesbian Bisexual Alliance) was looking for a venue to hold a dance, at a time when this was still controversial. No private venues wanted to be associated with us, and university venues demanded a $150 custodial fee which we could not afford. Hillel House alone offered us their hall for free, asking only that we clean up afterwards. When we expressed our deep gratitude they merely said, they weren't using the hall that night, why should it go to waste? This simple act when we were otherwise out of options I will never forget.

Kevin Whelan here: I found this absolutely fascinating--and I'm not even Jewish (the clue: my surname, though I'm pleased that there appear to be an increasing number of Jewish Kevin's). A story I think you will like. I was living in London in 1989. It was a beautiful summer's day and I was on the Finsbury Park bus, which passed through Manor House, an area with a large Hassidic population. An elderly man (a rabbi?) got on the bus and sat beside me--he could have been out of a shtetl in Poland circa 1870. He was wearing that very cool gear of the Hassids: black coat, spotless white shirt; the whole bit. Basically, Amish but Jewish. I was fascinated by the Hassids and had to get a conversation going. What do do? Then I had my opening gambit: The weather! Perfect opener. Me: "It's a nice day, isn't it?" He paused and glanced briefly at me. Then: "TOO nice". To this day it remains the funniest gag I've ever heard. But here's what's also funny: there was just the tiniest TINIEST suggestion of a smile at one corner of his mouth--it was a masterpiece in comic acting. Now, if that had been a Catholic priest of a vicar, I would have got back: "Yes, isn't it a lovely day!" And we're be off. Mazel tov from Ireland.
  • I was in Sophia Bulgeria with my cousin, we were looking at the sites, ( which was our custom as historians not tourists ) we came to a mosque, unfortunately it was locked, but a man approached us and asked if we would like a look inside and opened the mosque for us, after an inspection of the mosque, we thanked him and moved on. Shortly after we came across a synagogue sadly it too was locked and the same occured, a man approached us, asked us if we would a look inside and opened the synagogue for us. We went in chatted with the man and thanked him. My cousin and I were quite touched by both both events.
