Bagdad Cafe on old Route 66

Published 2016-11-07
This little roadside diner in Newberry Springs, CA was featured in a 1987 German movie and is now very popular with German and French tourists, bikers...and anyone looking for a solid breakfast in this part of the desert!

The film "Bagdad Cafe" is a masterpiece. Anyone who can't appreciate it has had their souls diminished somehow....

So, I’m watching Huell Howser’s Road Trip back in the 90s when he showcased The Bagdad Cafe and being familiar with SoCal in general because I grew up in San Diego, I knew where the place was but I didn’t have a car to get there. So in 2004 when I bought my brand spanking new Tacoma truck, I made it a point to retrace a bunch of Huell’s footsteps. And Bagdad Cafe was on the top of my list. So I drove into the area south through 29 palms and Bristol Lake and onto the 66 towards Newberry Springs. I got a real nice greeting at the Bagdad Cafe when I got there. What I was really looking for was the picture of Burt Lancaster that was hanging on the back wall. During Huell’s interview he asked him who that was in the picture and he couldn’t remember and it just cracked me up that who in the heck could not recognize Burt Lancaster from back in the day! But unfortunately the picture was gone. So I had big fun and of course I got my Bagdad Cafe T-Shirt to commemorate the visit and continued on to Death Valley since I just so happened to be in the neighborhood… lol

I just love those desert areas! Looking at the sky at night out in the mojave is simply mind blowing!, you can actually tell the curvature of the earth, its something I will never forget. I miss going there ever since I broke my back and became a paraplegic I've been unable to go. But thankfully I have wonderful memories of traveling with my mother, rest her soul.

I love the film Bagdad Cafe 1987 Comedy · A lonely German woman ends up in the most desolate motel on Earth and decides to .... This movie exemplifies how one person in the right place can affect a community of lives.

Bagdad Cafe is actually a really good film. Sure it's quirky, but the characters are likable, the actors mesh well together, the camera work and color filters make the viewer almost feel as they are a guest in the same rundown desert motel. The soundtrack is also hauntingly beautiful. It's a good film to watch when you want to watch a more "human" film instead of the typical run-of-the-mill summer blockbuster.

So glad the Wonderhussy archive is here to keep me sane during this CV lock down. I guess you need some miles under your feet to appreciate the movie. By the time I saw it I loved it.

I just watched your current video of the Bagdad cafe with the lady in her 80s trying to get it fixed up with the guy helping her. Interesting to see this older video of it. 👍

Been at the Cafe and had a Jack Palance burger. The place was unimpressive with no air conditioning with a fair dose of dust and flies. A couple semis outside creating clouds of dust. But in the middle of a 90 degree table with a window, a bus load of tourists entered and overwhelmed the limited spàce amidst all the paraphernalia and stickers. It's truly a piece of Americana. As corny as it sounds, it was a once in a lifetime experience to just be there.
