Create Log Periodic Antenna CLP5130-2

Published 2020-05-08
For years as a ham operator I never paid much attention to Log Periodic Antennas and always went after the Yagi. It wasn't until I took the time to understand the merits of the LPA that they became very attractive to me. Think of it, one beam that covers 5 ham bands with one coax. The only drawback is gain but it's still respectable for it's size. Listen as I guide you through my discovery of what makes a LPA great. 73! K9AT

I am interested in this antenna for a ic9700 and would be putting it in my attic (Hoa). I’m excited for a part two as well. Any chance the literature mentions cross mounting two for both polarizations? Assuming a non conductive mast I bet it would work fine. 73

I am currently using an Elk LPA temporarily in my shack made for 2m/70cm. I have no trouble using 5 watts simplex at 17 to 20 miles to a couple of friends (I live up at 1,150 ft, they’re at 130’). The Elk is really just a portable antenna with no where near the coverage of this Create antenna. I believe the forward pattern of an LPA is wider than a yagi also. One advantage of the antenna you have there is one coax for 5 bands. That is just great. Sure, lose some gain compared to a yagi, but so many other advantages. It looked like when you were doing the sweep there that your antenna would cover the GMRS frequencies also.

Hello David, I got this and now returning it…as the instructions were poor and I could NOT get those 2 small front element sections to connect to the boom properly. I can tell you had a lot more patience and focus on its time and effort you needed for assembly. Yours looks a lot better than what I’ve gotten. The side note was I was able to read the Chinese funnies in the Chinese newspaper that was packed in the box that I purchased this unit from DX engineering. Happy hunting and let me know how your results turned out once they were on your tower. 73’s DE KC0QNA

I've used SCALA's very well-made log periodics in broadcast applications, and wanted to note that the Create log looks pretty sturdy to me. Logs excel in many applications, and I'll definitely be getting one.

Nice and reasonably compact. Bit too lopsided though, I would buy a second for the other side and just phase them together.

Well, I am very baffled by one thing. Mine doesn't have an N connector on the front, but it had the center pin soldered to the top plate in the front and it broke. I'm going nuts trying to fix it too. An N connector on the front looks much more durable! I'm wondering how my 50-1.2G create got the feedpoint and cable that it has. Baffling. Also no current balun needed? Is that just a piece of rubber between the plates? I've been using one on the mast. No trouble with the hot boom with the shield right next to it? Thanks!

    I have CLP 5130 .90-220 MHZ.Geat video
  • What is the pros/cons of mounting the antenna vertically instead of horizontally?
  • How would this thing do as a scanner antenna when compared to a discone? I understand this is a directional antenna, so would it get more stations in the direction that I point it when compared to my current antenna?

Hi! What you see with the comet is the periodicity of the Z while you move on the frequency, right?
  • @philnyc
So, how does it perform once mounted up top the tower?
  • @MacsForever1
Sorry I do not. You might search for a manual online. Otherwise you can always support the company by purchasing one...
  • need to slow down what was swr lookimng for scanner beam. its not just ham its we pirates

They claim gain of 10 to 12 dBi. That sounds pretty good to me. Is that claim highly exaggerated?
