Whew this one is old. I think there's more than one kid out there, probably around my age, who wanted a 10/22 as a kid, but ended up settling for grandpa's pump action .22 I know I ain't the only one.

13 years into my 597 and still enjoying it. Wish there were more accessories available for it like there are for the 10/22.
  • I would love to own both including a marlin 795. I have the 597 and love it but you can never have too many .22s. I enjoy how they all have their individual appearance and perks. That's why I love Remington, Ruger, and Marlin.

I just bought my 597 today and was wondering how to take it down and you answered all my questions. Good video. Thanks.

If any of you guys are thinking on getting one of those plastic 30-round Remington extended magazines for the Remington, let me tell you that most of them require a little work before they start functioning as intended. In my case I had to take them apart and kind of "polish" the inner front wall of the magazine, where the tip of the rounds were getting stuck with plastic residue from the thermal gluing, with some long sand paper. I just put the mag in the vise and then made several passes with long string of sand paper. After cleaning all the waste plastic, they started feeding properly, although I haven't been able to load them with more than 25 rounds. 20 for comfort. The 10-shot metallic mags on the other hand work perfectly all the time. Keep Shooting makes the best quality ones. Cheers!

I have a 10/22 my dad gave me a few years back. It is about 36 years old and looks like I just bought it yesterday. Manufactured early 70's.

Thank you that will you help me a lot I think I’m gonna pick up a Remington very informative you make great points thank you
  • Honest review I like that. Very informative as I’m thinking of getting either a 10-22 or 597
  • Tried the 10/22, loved it. Tried the Remington 597, loved it enough that I bought one. What drove me to the 597 is really price point. If Ruger can make a simplistic 10/22 variant then that would be something to aim for. The 597 has the same if not better quality than your standard 10/22 in my opinion. Cleaning is simple, last round hold open, same monte carlo style, and its cheaper. The only issue with the 597 is some magazines are duds. I have 2 30 round magazines and the stock 10 round. One of my 30 round mags has a feeding issue where the round will stay stuck down far in the mag. Tried playing around with the spring but no luck. I'm going to return it for another one but thats what's really killing sales for the 597, lack of quality mags and lack of modification options. But hey, all boom sticks have their pros and cons

My VTR 597 has been amazing! No issues and are anykinda ammo I threw at it. Love the heavy barrel and here in Canada the 597 magazine have no legal capacity unlike the 1022 which can legally hold 10. My 1022 TD has been not so great. Failure to go into battery, failure to eject and sometimes even Slam fire from the bolt traveling forward causing the round to get stuck in the barrel. Put about $350 worth of parts into it and now it will shoot Federal ammo about 80% reliability. 597 for the win!

The remington 597 barrel can also be cleaned from the chamber end by simply pulling out the rubber bolt buffer when the action has been disassembled. This is a big advantage over the marlin 60/795, mossberg plinkster, and the non takedown 10/22.

I'm sure you've already been asked but what is the scope you run on the 597 and what is the max yards you have it set to? Love this video by the way.
  • I own a Mossberg 702 Plinkster,and I've put at least 60,000 rounds through it.It only cost $100,it has a great trigger,is rediculously accurate,and it's very reliable and hardy.Best kept secret of the 22lr world.
  • I have a Ruger 1022 a Remington 597 and a Marlin 60 in my opinión the 597 is the best out the box, but I like all the posible mods available for the 1022, just Love the 597 shoots great and fits me better, feels more like a big rifle, it's a keeper.

Was that 597 camo and u painted it is green . The stock looks just like my multicam stock and I painted mine odgreen
  • @SportyTuna
GREAT video! I've been looking for a detailed video on how to get the Remington 597 taken apart for cleaning and put back together. All the ones I found were poor quality and bad angles. Thanks for this!
  • @whippy107
My 597 was completely unreliable as brand new...multiple jams with every magazine. My friend's daughter had the same issues with hers. I installed Volquartsen aftermarket extractors in them and now they both work great. The rifle was made from really cheap parts, but I really like the design of the mechanisms. I love the dual bolt spring system! The rifle is really accurate, too!

I don't see why folks complain about the two guide rods with set screws. It seems Remington solved the problem of bending recoil springs that every Marlin owner has dealt with. Sure, I wish all my rifles came apart like an M16- but this seems logical at least, no?
