The newly facelifted Porsche 911 is now available as a hybrid. But wait, before you spit fire and brimstone in Porsche’s direction, this isn’t some hulking PHEV!

Instead, only the 911 GTS model has been electrified and – hurrah – the starting point is an enlarged and unique-to-the-GTS 3.6-litre flat-six.

Said engine ditches one turbocharger, and the remaining solo turbo now has an electric motor, which Porsche claims eliminates all lag. There’s also an e-motor integrated into the gearbox, with both motors connected to a 1.9kWh battery operating at 400V.

Total system output is 533bhp and 450lb ft, and the 0-62mph time is down to a scant three seconds flat. Weight goes up by 50kg, but there are myriad benefits wrought by the new ‘T-Hybrid’ system, such as the engine sitting 110mm lower than before.

Alongside the GTS, the Carrera, Cabriolet and Targa models have all been given a tickle over as part of the ‘Gen 2’ facelift for the 992 generation of 911 models. Top Gear Magazine’s Ollie Kew is your guide to the whole lot…

Has Porsche's clever T-hybrid system made this a more desirable sports car?
  • @mkbhd
I can't believe I've already become the person that prefers the older generation. The one with the twisty startup, the real tachometer, the better looking front end. Maybe the performance of the new turbo s can sway me
  • Waiting for the turbo S. Wish they'd kept the analogue rev counter.
  • @asianinashed
Honestly, very happy what top gear has become now. Instead of trying to capture what jeremy has done, theyve now gone back to ACTUAL automotive journalism
  • Missing the analog tach. But having an electric turbo may actually make it feel more natural. And the weight stayed relatively light. Good things I guess?
  • @zlfw
Crazy to think we are already getting the 992.2, it feels like we just got the 992 yesterday
  • @timo7641
Remember, The first Porsche Hybrid vehicle is VK 45.01 (P) (Porsche Tiger)
  • @darkpit1303
When i first read the title i thought they ruined the car, but now... this is actually acceptable, nothing to really complain about except the lack of a manual transmission
  • @Von45Rose
The real bummer here is all the old Porsche 911s just got more expensive 😢
  • this turbo technology will make the Turbo S and GT2RS of this gen soooo gnarly i bet.
  • @MrSpecialad
Really clever engineering, and while I’ve not owned a Porsche I’ve been a fan since I was a kid and enjoyed driving several (including a 992 GTS) on track, but… more power, more complexity, more weight and more cost are 4 things I’d put at the bottom of my need to have list as an enthusiast. I’m beginning to realise how on point Jason Camissa was when he called the Toyota GR86 the world’s best $40k Porsche!

analogue centre rev counter was iconic. beautiful clock that oozes quality and premium. can’t believe they would digitise it and try reduce costs.
  • @sebastiank7956
Porsche should've just paid you to make this their "corporate" video. Way more natural, conversational while still top-notch lighting and cinematography. Well done.
  • @mwong987
Why is the lighting so good? The use of the soft boxes from above is extraordinary
  • @13H
This is the right way to do a hybrid. Good job Porsche!
  • @djsteink
So much better than Porsche’s pretentious reveal video
