I have driven over this bridge several times and it is VERY scary. In fact it is the only bridge I am scared to cross. In one direction, the side barriers are metal bars that you can see through. There is a gap at the edge of the pavement and you can see the water far below. The bridge is VERY HIGH. As you approach it you're at an angle and you can see how high you are going to be and my thoughts are, "I'm going up THERE??" It is also a very long bridge. What is the WORST is that sometimes if there is really heavy traffic, they will allow two way traffic on one of the spans to help alleviate the heavy traffic. You are trapped on that bridge - you must keep going. There are no shoulders. If someone going the other direction ever hit you, you would have no place to go. I try to avoid it.

The fees they charge to cross this bridge are scarier than the actual bridge itself. I'm a truck driver and it costs me $48 one way.

Try crossing the Mackinac Bridge (I-75) in Michigan. It's longer and has a span that, shoreline to shoreline, is just 28 ft short of 5 miles of open water. On a windy day, it'll test your nerves.
  • I ran across the Chesapeake Bay Bridge in Annapolis Maryland when they closed down the eastbound lanes for the road race every year in November they will have 2 way traffic on the Westbound lanes so they can close down the eastbound span for runners for the 10 k race!

I’ve been across these bridges (eastbound and westbound) 30-40 times and never got scared. Sometimes the traffic will backup and come to a complete stop, so occasionally it’s frustrating, but never scary to drive across.
  • Im from Maryland. I live in NC now. As a child that bridge always scared the hell outta me . But i miss my home town of Edgewater. I haven't been back since i was 26 im 62 now been a long time. Im hoping one day ill get to go back . Itll be nice to see how much its changed.😊

I think I sailed under this bridge last September. I was on a schooner participating in the Great Chesapeake Bay Schooner Race. Personally, the scariest roads are the tunnels under Norfolk. It was long ago but I remember thinking that all that water is above me so just stay calm and stay in your lane.

I had car trouble on this bridge. And had to walk halfway back.

No, Mackinaw Island bridge connecting the lower peninsula to the upper peninsula in Michigan was the scariest bridge I have ever driven on by far. It was insane because the bridge was moving with the winds, and you could feel it swaying.
  • It's super cool to run in the race across the Chesapeake Bay Bridge in Annapolis Maryland in November. They used to call the race Across the Bay 10K but now they call it Bay Bridge Run!

Try driving the Lake Pontchartrain Causeway in Louisiana.

I remember (as a child) taking a ferry across the bay before the Bay Bridge was constructed. After the bridge was constructed I drove across it many times. I never thought of it being scary.

I find the bridge beautiful more than anything else. The he view from up there over the Chesapeake Bay alone is worth the toll.
