E Collar Training HACKS For BEGINNERS

How to use the remote collar to train your dog? Shock collar training is dog training in the past. E collar training is the best way to have a reliable recall with your dog off-leash!

You want to start by associating that low-level stimulation with the command. So I trigger the e-collar stimulation with the command to come, and then when the dog comes to me, I shut it off. It’s a classic form of escape training. This is not a correction, it is not a punishment, it does not hurt the dog. All it does is get his attention from a distance without having to physically touch him.

You also want to make it fun by using lots of praise, “good come” and “good dog”, as well as physical praise, such as petting and treats. Eventually, you should be able to increase the distance, even getting the dog to come when you are not in their line of sight.

One important note is to not to try and do this from a “sit & stay” position. You want the dog to be mobile – walking around, sniffing, investigating, doing his thing.

E-Collars can be really overwhelming for dog owners, and there’s a lot of misinformation out there, which is why I put together this blog post and video. If you still have questions, I highly recommend working with a dog trainer in your area who is comfortable using an e-collar and can help you establish your e-collar basics.

Just wanted to stop by and say how wonderful this dogtra #nobaddogs edition is. I've been working with my GSD on the mini educator and have had butt loads of issues and got this dogtra in the mail today and we had an hour training session. NIGHT AND DAY. If anyone is in the market for one I'd seriously skip the other brand and at least go for the dogtra and i'd specifically recommend tom's because of the strap and features. #NOBADDOGS

Thank you Tom! More people need to be educated that e-collars are not bad. I had my deaf Pitbull trained to both hand signals and an e-collar so that I could get his attention no matter what. He was the best dog I've ever owned and was the only one of my dogs I fully trusted off leash anywhere even though he was deaf. I only ever used a level 2 on him for recall and he responded every single time no matter what distractions there were, and he loved children so taking him to the park was a joy. I used vibration setting with hand signals for other commands when he was not next to me. I would totally train another dog with an e-collar and think nothing of it.
  • I got the 280C Tom Davis edition and started training with my dog when he was 8 mo. Now at 15 months, my dog is frequently off leash when we go hiking and is very reliable on his recall, even when the collar isn't on. Thank you for all you do, sir!

I just wanted to say how much of a breakthrough this dogtra e-collar has been for our reactive rescue dog. She really needed that extra tap on her shoulder to regain her focus and work through her insecurities. She already seems so much more calm and confident. Thank you SO MUCH Tom for all of your training videos. There truly are NO BAD DOGS! 🖤
  • With Zak George strongly pushing to have tools banned, it is fantastic to see more videos like this showing people exactly how they are ment to be used and how they should be conditioned. I feel many trainers like Zak only focus on the negative outcome due to wrongful use of a tool vice recognizing the good and seeing that dogs can still be happy and have a positive relationship. Positive reinforcement should always be the first thing. But a tool offers results that +R alone can't achieve as easily. Tools are not abusive unless you make it abusive. Train responsibly and have fun with your best friend. They don't care about the method so long as it's fair and they are enjoying their time.

I've learned so much from Tom videos, he is great. The e-collar is basically a communication device, my dog gets super exited when I show her the collar, she loves her collar and being off leash.

Such a good introduction for e-collar training! It's the MOST humane thing for a dog - they are finally allowed to BE a dog and have FREEDOMS when off leash trained with the e-collar. They get more exercise, naturally get taken out more often by their owners, and can get so many more steps in than dogs that are restricted to a leash. Love it.

Incredible video as always!!!! I’m loving the beginner videos!🫶

LOOOOOOVE this explanation! I will definitely be referring clients on the fence to this video! One thing I use a lot that I heard you say in a video once is that the stim becomes conditioned to be a positive thing, so it's almost like remote control clicker training. Thank you for doing what you do! 💜💜💜

Just started e collar training with my Dutch shepherd. He is responding well so far and understanding the training! Super excited to have him off leash trained
  • @emmysue673
love you a ton Tom! you've made our quality of life soooo much better thanks to you ❤🎉
  • Excellent video. Sadly people opposed to Ecollars have no idea that they can be turned down and controlled. They only assume that they will only electrocute a dog. A lack of knowledge leads to more people getting that same lack of knowledge l thank you Tom for promoting proper training with the Ecollar. When my dogs see me get the ecollar out they get excited in a positive way and are ready to have fun. It is totally positive for them.
