Major Derailment: Locomotive Derailed & 2 Cars plus1400 Feet Track Tore Up!

Published 2021-06-02
I will post the next video showing why this derailment happened along
with a second video to follow of the damage the locomotive sustained, so watch those 2 upcoming videos to get your questions answered as to why this happened and how the locomotive fared, will in that latter video also share how Hulcher re railed the locomotive.

Will also be posting pictures of various stages of the event in the Community Room
on my channel so keep checking back to that tab or subscribe and click turn notifications
on and you'll get updates automatically. Here's link to my channel

I spliced 4 videos together I took that evening so you didn't have to wait and watch all
4 separately. Will also post all the videos of this on a playlist on my channel ccrx 6700. There will be like 7 more videos coming up about all of what went on including some on them putting the track back together.

No one was hurt or injured, only the company's pocketbook...LOL The derailment happened
on Wednesday April 21 about 5 PM. On that Saturday afternoon about 1 PM I tamped this and they ran
a train over it by 2:30 on slow order. Everyone involved in getting the rolling stock
re railed and the track back in service did a phenomenal job! They worked around
the clock with very long hours for everyone.

This occurred on the Cumberland Mine Railroad near Kirby Pa. on curve18 at mile post 4 with the train headed EB with loads. I will also
post several more videos about them putting the track back together. We had about
1400 feet of track torn out along with almost 700 cross ties destroyed.

Memory is serving me better now than in the videos, it has been since 1993 when we've had
this kind of main line destruction. We had several derailments back before then where
6 or 7 cars have come off and rolled over loaded and several derailments caused by
bad bearings, but this is the worst track tear up we have ever had. Several
of the contractors who came in said this is some of the worst rail destruction they had
ever seen.

I will give you a clue before my next video on why the derailment happened. If you have watched Thomas the Tank Engine, then you know that all the derailments in that show were
caused by the silly cars because they were angry! LOL But if there is any doubt we will
call Sir Topham Hatt and he will get to the bottom of this.

Here is the link to watch my theory on what caused the derailment:
   • Why the Derailment at Curve 18  Happened

Thank you so much for watching. Track is back in service and train is running at track speed, and in case you are wondering, it's 25 MPH track speed, the operator on the derailment was running at 22 MPH when this happened. He had followed standard operating procedures
for this section of track. The end of train DPU was in throttle run 3 when
this happened, the lead loco operator was just getting ready to go to idle on that
end of train unit when the train went into emergency. This is only the second time in it's history that our #1 locomotive has ever been derailed and it's been running this track since
1977! The company is also looking into having some track panels on hand to use in'
case this kind of problem should occur in the future. Having track panels available
would have probably saved a whole day in the reconstruction.

I asked a train engineer how many times his train had derailed. He said, “I’m not sure, it’s hard to keep track.”

Having worked as a forestry contractor for over 30 years there were weeks that if you could just make it to Friday night you knew Monday would be better. All the best Dave with your rerailing, we’re all there with you!
  • @ronhelman3985
Wow, that destroyed everything. Well no one got hurt and nothing is on its side that's 2 plusses. Thanks Dave for sharing!!!!
  • I grew up between Kennesaw and Acworth, GA. The Tracks (The Old L&N Line) were about 1000 yards behind my house. I was 8 to 12 years old. Around 1968 to 1972 there were no less than 4 Coal Trains derailed and smashed cars and spilled Coal EVERYWHERE!! One derailment happened when I was in our garden with a clear view to the tracks. I heard a horrible noise coming from the tracks and coal cars were falling off on their sides, running on top of each other, black coal dust was everywhere. It seems like it took forever for the thing to stop!!! The most amazing sound of screeching, crunching metal I've ever heard. I'm 62 now and I'll never forget those days... Amazing... BTW - that's the same line that The Great Locomotive Chase took place on during the Civil War. Kennesaw still has the old steam Locomotive "The General" in the Railway Museum in Kennesaw, GA.
  • @JawTooth
Amazing how far in front of the locomotive that the rail rolled. Good thing the cars didn't pile up and spill everywhere.
  • @WJack97224
Good start on documenting this problem. I'm looking forward to more info and videos of the repair. Thank you Jaw Tooth or whoever. Good on ya mate. Glad the crew survived.
  • @espeescotty
Hey Dave, thanks for all of the information in the description. This sure was a heck of a mess! I'll be watching for sure to see the rerailing and rebuilding mission.
  • @SmallMartingale
Yeah that's a lot of damage, that must be an awfully intimidating thing to look at. Thanks for taking some time to make this great video for us, something we wouldn't get to see otherwise 👍
  • @petezapadka
OMG, Dave! I am shocked and terribly saddened to hear of this! But thank you for letting us know. My heart is with you and all the workers who will toil to get this right!
  • @leslane4421
Holy cow Dave, your right, what a mess! I guess that's railroading also.
  • @curtyanok6878
Dave, do I ever feel bad for you and the CCRX. We've seen how hard you worked to keep this line in tip-top shape then this happens. Keep us posted on how things are going.
  • @ronaldpiper4812
This is were you see the bunch of simi trucks of pipe layers and a bunch or lights and so on. Hearing how they walk loads back up sounds impressive. Thank you
  • @Sven_Okas1967
Wow, at least the train is still standing. something has certainly given way under the train. the main thing is that there has only been sheet metal damage and no personal injury. To clean it up you need at least 48 hours. do you come there at least with cranes ran to the place??? As I see it, you can use the rails and the ties to be recycled. Good luck with the long shift. Greetings from Berlin/ Germany. Sven
  • @t.j.carroll8512
Thank you for taking time to let see what is happening. Hope all goes well and quickly getting track back in order.
  • @monteman700
Glad to hear everyone is ok and everything stayed upright. Keep us posted on the progress.
  • @6777Productions
Dang, what a round day, but as you said, luckily no one was hurt in this mess. Plus! They are lucky to have such a talented person to know how to fix it on up! Excited to see the rest of this "mini series"!
  • @noclass2gun342
After working for hulcher services for a while I can tell you, there's never not a derailment being worked somewhere. Side note... this one isn't that bad. The one in Prattville Colorado was a doosy... 4 Locos and 24 5 packers
  • @briankemp5206
Thanks for sharing Dave. That did a number on your track. Good luck repairing it.
