When kids are surrounded by war, it’s no surprise they act out what they see. Six-year-old Valentyn told CBS News that he and his friend Andrii want to protect what’s left of their Ukrainian neighborhood after Russian forces destroyed most of it. The boys have dug trenches, created missile launchers out of scrap pieces of wood, and have learned to salute. Likely the biggest trauma of their young lives is played out in violent games of make-believe.

That what kids do. They use play to do more than ‘play’. It helps them to work through things. It helps them rewrite a narrative to a better outcome. Gives them power in a powerless situation. Let them dream of being heroes, brave little guys.

I can imagine how terrible it is to be such a young child with loved ones who died due to an evil man. This is history and I will always remember this.

Gods bless them and protect them. It was wholesome and a little heartwarming seeing the Ukrainian soldier salute and greet them

It's funny when I was a little kid I used to play pretend playing soldiers. These two kids take it to a whole nother level! 🇺🇦

These poor kids should NOT have to be forced into this
  • No kids should ever have a childhood including war and death. I send my love to the people of Ukraine to help overcome this war.

"We want to become soldiers after we grow up" never forget that
  • So sad that the children in Ukraine has to be in fear and have the guards up in this horrible time
  • As kids me and my friends used to play and act like soldiers with toy guns. When I look at them I can see myself from the past. However, when I was a kid, there was no war but spirits from the past, not so long ago war, were still present. I can only imagine what those childern experience and go through. I only wish for them to grow up in safe environment and experience joy, happiness and love. They don't deserve horror, tears and pain. They didn't choose this.

It's nice to see people have so much compassion and concern for children in Ukraine. Tamir Rice was doing the same as these kids and so many didn't show compassion for what followed. He was also a child.

He wants to become a solider when he grows up because he saw what happened to his country and how hard his hero’s try to protect it, kid… you have my respect, you got some mad determination 💯❤️
