I'm sure everyone here already knows, but the Weirding Module has a weird explanation: in the books, one of the things that Paul and Jessica do to make the Fremen so powerful is teach them The Weirding Way, a kind of Bene Gesserit martial art that makes you seem to move super-fast. David Lynch took that idea, said "shooting a new magic martial art is going to take too much time and effort" and the line "My name has become a killing word" (Paul referencing how off-putting it is that the Fremen cry his name as they go into battle), and turned it into secret shout-guns that Paul and Jessica taught the Fremen how to make to give them the edge. The new Dune movie simplifies all of this, by just saying "the Fremen are better fighters than the Sadaukar, and it turns out that there are SO MANY FREMEN hiding in the Southern half of the planet that no one knows about that they can just win by force of numbers."
