On the night of January 21, 2023, San Gabriel Valley's Lunar New Year celebration took a heartbreaking turn for the Asian-American community when a perpetrator named Huu Can Tran entered the Star Ballroom Dance Studio in Monterey Park and opened fire. He then drove over to Lai Lai Ballroom & Studio in Alhambra to attempt a second shooting before his efforts were thwarted by 26-year-old Brandon Tsay.
