This is the first chapter of everything i know about Haruomi Hosono (so far). It's also my first attempt at a video essay like this, so I hope you like what I was able to put together.

Special Thanks to:
Haruomi Hosono
Ryuichi Sakamoto
Yukihiro Takahashi
Akiko Yano
and all other musicians I mention in this video. Your music is inspiring and will live on forever.

Also, thank you to everyone in my life who I've been talking to this video about for the last 6 months. You're the best. Thanks for listening.

An article by dex digital that describes YMO's appearance on Soul Train:
"Japanese Gentleman Come to Soul Train"

This video covers all of Hosono's work (that I know about) from Apryl Fool in 1969 to BGM in 1981.

u have no idea how refreshing it is to see some love for hosono and suzuki, criminally underrated
  • I never thought a person around my age would make a video on haruomi Hosono
  • That 1980 performance of "Tighten Up" on Soul Train is such an infectious culture clash of a historical moment that it gives me tears of joy every time I watch it.
  • With Yukihiro Takahashi being in Sadistics/Mika Band, he played with the GOAT Masayoshi Takanaka
  • You have certainly earned a follow. I'm so happy that people are acknowledging Hosono/ YMO in general! Also just love how you illustrated the sound scapes for new listeners. Can't wait for the next part 🎉

i’ve listened to a couple of his songs in isolation but now i’m def listening to all his discography, this guy owns
  • Excellent documentary. I'm actually set to interview one of Hosono's long-time collaborators, the singer/piano whizz Akiko Yano next week. Would love to maybe discuss a project with you regarding Yukihiro Takahashi.

I was lucky to see YMO on their first US tour. Great video

That narrator on Multiplies is Wolfman Jack, a very famous DJ. He was also in American Graffiti.

omg josh dare and video essay????? this actually life changing
  • Josh! It's Will C. from University Choir! Congratulations on the success of this video I'm sure you worked hard on. It's so funny how you and I have gone down parallel musical paths. I remember talking to you about Paul McCartney RAM and The Beach Boys years back. Absolutely floored to see you popping up in my YouTube algorithm. Keep crushing it - to many more successes!
  • Oh wow, I saw those tiktoks you made about how to talk to Beatles fans, I didn't know you were also a Youtuber. Cool! I've been listening to a podcast called Primer, and their first season is about city pop, and Hosono comes up a lot.

  • @volvomeister

  • @keykiyox
Above anything, he is one of the best bass players in the history of music. That good.
  • 44:14 I never knew about this at all! A demo of Behind the mask is on the 40th anniversary of thriller from 2022. It uses the exact instrumental from yellow magic orchestra. Where as the Michael album is a revamped remix with a modern style. The original demo of Michael’s behind the mask was covered by Eric clapton and the human league aswell! Very cool I would’ve never put this together if it wasn’t for this great video!
