Introduction to Psychodynamic Theory and Therapy (for beginners)

Published 2020-08-26
Psychodynamic theory and therapy is the oldest of the four most prominent and scientifically recognised approaches to psychotherapy. It is based on the psychodynamic/psychoanalytic theory contributed to by Sigmund Freud, Carl Gustav Jung, Alfred Adler, Erik Erikson, Melanie Klein, Anna Freud and too many more to name them all here. Psychodynamic theory does not only provide the basis for psychodynamic therapy to treat mental illness but also aims to capture the development, structure and function of the human psyche. Therefore, it can be useful to anyone who wants to understand themselves better, live a more meaningful life - or just be fascinated by some of the most elaborated (and controversial) theories psychology has to offer.

    1. Greater focus on emotions instead of thoughts. 2. Exploring the defences. 3. Repating patterns. 4. The past. 5. The focus on interpersonal relationship. 6. Exploring wishes, dreams and fantasies.

I've been seeing the same psychodynamic therapist for 13 years. My quality of life has drastically improved since I've started. It's crazy how it helps my anxiety and gives me such deep self awareness

I'm a graduate student in the US in Social Work and I'm in a class on theory in clinical social work practice; this was super helpful. (I also was very pro-CBT before taking this class, but nowadays I lean very psychodynamic!)

I had to comment you broke down the info so simple so I could understand the concept

One should only watch this about five times. Alina, you are a veritable WIZARD of Psychodynamic Therapy! Your command of English is remarkable, but I LOVE the way you say names like Freud, and Karen Horney! Your videos are very valuable and informative! THANK YOU!!! I guess I should just watch out for that "transference,: huh?
  • I found it so easy to watch and listen to your explanation. You have helped me tremendously. I am following this form of therapy currently, I follow it in Dutch and even though I understand pretty much everything, to listen to your explanation in English gave me a number of "Ooooh NOW I get it" moments!! It was a really interesting video. This method of therapy is amazing and I wish I'd found it years ago... But it's not just the therapy, it's the therapist too. She was worth the wait!

dont ever stop making videos about psychology, you helped me a lot with my homeworks >_<
  • The recognition of the developmental tasks and propensity to have problems with some of them is a real strength of psychodynamic therapy

I recently graduated in Psychology and Counselling and currently looking to take PostGrad studies on the path to becoming a Counsellor. I think this is the approach I will take, more for how you explain emotions and the developmental perspective as opposed to thoughts. I can see merit in all approaches to therapy but I feel this is where I will start my journey as it tends to resonate within me. Thank you.

I'm glad you're making these videos. I have noticed that there isn't a lot of content (in English) discussing psychodynamic and psychoanalytic therapies and the few that do talk about them like completely wrong outdated approaches.
