Hogarth is best known for his series paintings of 'modern moral subjects', of which he sold engravings on subscription. The Collection contains the set called 'Marriage A-la-Mode'. Although pugnaciously hostile to Continental art, he succumbed to French influence, and his Rococo-inspired collection of works led him to become widely revered as the first English Master.

Akin to Shakespeare Hogarth is indeed. Another stunning artist who benefitted from NOT being classically trained. And I see still that some fail to understand some of his bits - like the 'waste paper' from Masquerades and Operas'. It is waste paper because they couldn't sell it, not because it was not seen as great. It is still like that today and they print a lot less of it. Hogarth is the clear eye of that period seeing things as they really were. I have to wonder if any kind of training would have enhanced his work or if it would have hindered it and his imagination.

O my..."Marriage á la Mode" ABSOLUTELY STRUCK ME D E A D. Such a great, heartbreaking series! p.s. We could all benefit from dropping the nitpicking on the "17th-18th Cs" issues. It's such a titchy, unimportant detail compared to all the depth of historical detail.

He wasn't born until 1697, so his work was done during the 18th century. Still, what's a hundred years between friends ....
  • There is no such thing like Hogarth's 17th-Century Caricatures for crying at loud. He was born in 1697 so all of his works are 18th-Century. Who is writing these titles?
