One of the requirements by our mortgage lender was to have the septic tank inspected. The seller pays for this inspection. We had already paid for a home inspection, and only a few minor electrical problems were found and quickly repaired by the owner. Anyway, this is our first experience with an older septic system, specifically 40 years old. The process of inspection and the exact location of the septic tank covers and drain field was important to us for future maintenance and landscaping. Needless to say, we were elated that the septic system passed the test! Once we move in, we plan on replacing the buried tank covers with above grade risers for easier access.

I used 1 sheet of insulation board 4x 8 1 1/2 thick and cut into eight sections stacked them one upon the other with paver bricks on top! The cost of the insulation materials was about 60 dollars and just cut 8 squares from the material. Oh yes I sealed the tank lid with none hardening sealer. My tank lid sits down about 12 inches below the grade of the earth. So next time I just can removed the insulation squares with little effort and have my tank pumped. Easy and cheap!

As a septic inspector, I would ate to have someone recording and asking questions like this 😂

a problem with the lid on the surface is that it is accessible to children and being light weight can easily be removes. I would have it slightly below the surface.

Thats a very basic inspection. An added thing that can be inspected is to dig a hole around a drain tube and see the condition of the gravel around the field.

looks like the homeowners took good care of the system and only flushed whats supposed to be flushed down the drain..good working system for 40 years old wouldn't hesitate to move in there at all

I don't know what area this property is in but a lot of the foreclosures that I am looking at in the midatlantic have septics that were not maintained because the homeowner lost the house. A lot harder to work with than city sewer!

They will charge a few hundred to look at a septic and leave. Easiest money out there.
