Warning: Plot twist! This one won't end how you think. Follow along as I attempt to replace the old original starter in my 1964 Willys Jeep CJ-5 Hurricane F134 engine with a later model Toyota Landcruiser starter. It can be done! But does it need to be done? Also, side note: get an unwanted review of the Harbor Freight 7 function digital multimeter.

  • Hi! I saw you video yesterday about your old 1964 cj-5 that would not crank becuse of the starter. I had the same problem dealing with a 1965 Hurricane F-134 engine I am trying to rebuilt. I am also a fanatic of Toyoya Land Creuisers. I have a 1970 Toyota Land Cruiser Jeep with a 6 cilinder gas engine. I have several stater motor for the Land Cruiser because they are easier and cheaper to obtain. So I just took one of my Toyota stater motor and follow your advice on how to adapt it to the CJ-5 housing. Problem solved! Thanks "Bad Hombre Garage"! You saved muy 1965 CJ-5 proyect. You have a follower from Panama. Thanks again!

  • What I have always been told the FJ 6 cyl. engine is a very close copy of a chevy 235 6 cyl. sooo maybe a 235 starter might work also.? In the town that I live in the pop. is just a shade over 10K. and there is a place that rebuilds any kind of starter motor. When I had them redo the one for my Ford 289 it was like $20.00.

    That's cool that you can put a Toyota Starter in it at $60 a pop you can kill alot of them $800

    Good vid!! I've got an old m38a1 withe the f head in it. So I like the idea of knowing that I can put a yota starter in it. I went ahead and put a voltmeter gauge in it. It has an ammeter, but I like the voltmeter much better to indicate the condition of both the bat, & the alternator. Just my 2 cents!!

    Sweet Bro! I'm doing the same thing on my 1952 M38A1. The old Auto-Lite starter needs bushings and a Bendix gear (not worth fixing), found the land cruiser starter 16224 at AutoZone for $61.99. It will be here in a couple days. Can't wait to get it up and running again! Thanks for the video as there is not much out there for this conversion except forums. And that's just a bunch of words, pics/vid's or it didn't happen.
  • check on your old starter it works with a full charge bat,// before pulling you starter check bat.- and recharging of volts// going back to batt, to keep and hold a full charge //before removing your starter

    I really appreciate the video, I've been considering the same upgrade for my 66 and I'm glad to see it went in pretty smoothly. Do you notice a big improvement starting it up now? Mine takes a while to finally fire up, but I haven't figured out if that's a starter issue or fuel delivery issue.

    Some good learning points there. Did you go back and check the Jeep starter motor after you solved the real problem??

    Was the other starter motor still bad or was it just a flat battery in the end

    Aren’t you glad you didn’t buy the $890 one! Save the old starter, it’s probably good too
