One tip I use frequently is when buying sheet goods look for damaged edges, broken corners etc. I usually will get 30 to 40 % off on damaged goods. And almost always I can cut around any damaged areas. Another paint savings can be had if you want gallons and all they have are quarts. You’ll get the gallon price instead of 4 individual quart prices. When buying black iron pipe plan on buying a full length and have them cut and thread the sizes you need. There’s no extra charge for them to do it. Leave a cut list with the employee running the machine and go do all your other shopping while they are doing that for you.

Great job, Dave. As a HD long time associate, I would like to add that generally speaking HD does not price match with Harbor Freight. Also, ask before expecting a price match on online retailers. Lastly, if there is an open dumpster please ask the store management before dumpster diving and know that HD insurance will not cover you if you are injured. Thanks again Dave for great tips and tricks. And —watch for yellow tags for extra savings.
  • I always like to check the clearance section in the back of the store. I have found really good deals there with massive mark downs on items.
  • I have found, for me personally, that Home Depot is where you get your building materials to get the structure done and Lowes is where you go to get your decorative finishes, like ceiling fans, fixtures, flooring etc.
  • I agree with the previous comment. At Lowes there is no yearly limit on Military purchases. The discount is easy to use at the register. I have gotten free paint. I have bought mistint paint for $10 a gallon -my 10% then gotten a manufacturer's rebate for $10.

Thanks for the tips Dave. Here's one I use to save time shopping: I order online for store pickup. You can't always rely on what the website tells you is in stock, so I will just wait for them to notify me that the items are ready for pickup. There's no added cost and no need to go and search for stuff.
  • The Veterans Discount has been working great for me for years. Now I use it for online purchases, which calculates it automatically. I first began using the discount at Lowe's, extensively, but recently doing more business at Home Depot, due to their relationship with Ryobi, and my desire to expand my tools there. Thank You for the video!

A couple of clarifications and another tip. Home Depot will price match competitors but not itself. So if the price is lower online or at another HD then you have to buy at the other HD or online. This can lead to crazy scenarios like standing in the store buying the item online to get the lower online price and then walking over to the order pickup desk to get the item that you just saved $50 on. It is crazy but it works. Also, you can get a $100 to $200 discount by getting their credit card at the same time. And You can have more than one HD card. just stop using the card and they terminate it after 6 months. The great value of the card is that it generally extends the return period to six months. And you can't overestimate being nice, polite and friendly. Associates can and do give you discounts.

You hit the tip I use most at the end going to the aisle and bay for the product your looking for. Makes going more enjoyable, instead of searching and asking
  • Thanks, Dave. Many great Tips I was not aware of that I will be using now that I know.

I primarily shop at HD because there are 2 of them within 5 minutes of my house. Menards is number 2 again because of distance to my house but also because Menards is basically a home improvement center mashed up with a walmart. They carry some unique stuff.

Military Discount used to be 10% for unlimited amount, but since they restricted it to $400, I switched to LOWES (which is still unlimited).
  • @TheBrokenLife
Another tip is to shop at the store in your area that has the obviously lower foot traffic. If the store is hurting to make their sales numbers, they are more likely to cut you a deal if you ask nicely. Same thing goes for stores in the "bad part" of town. I worked at the #2 highest theft HD store in the country (which has now long ago been closed), which also had a terrible physical location so we were a slow store as well (this was half the reason we were the "highest" theft store... we had very low sales to counteract the numbers), and we would pretty much beg customers to buy things if the order was big enough (over a few grand). The mark up on flooring and fixtures and kitchen cabinets and stuff was mind boggling, so 15-20% off was not uncommon on large orders of those items in our store, no coupons or anything required. Just a willingness to spend big and haggle. 😅

Got a brand new ridding lawmower for half price at Lowes it was a return that was never used it was still set up in shipping mold customer took it home and for what ever reason brought it back that was 2 years ago still works great
  • Great video. You should also mention the clearance schedule with the pricing/ dates.

It wasn't Hone Depot, but it was Target, and I found three 10x10 metal bamboo gazebo. $600 retail price on each one. Had to share the wealth with my brother in law, my best friend, and of course myself. The only reason I did it is because I could see it as clear as day standing up out of the dumpster. Lucky for me, nothing else was in it.
  • @tinksfawn08
Can’t wait to see the HD vs. Lowe’s vid. I buy at both because I have both near me and have the Kobalt cordless tools and Ryobi cordless tools.
  • @Trekev
Great tips. I'd like to add a few more. Keep an eye out on the appliance ding/scratch area. My wife and I got a $2200 fridge for $800 that only had a few dings on the side. Also we got 25% off an item just because the box was damaged, we just asked for a discount from a store associate!
