In this four-part video seminar series, Ryron and Rener explore the four elements of jiu-jitsu, starting with DEFENSE.

Part 1: Defend
a. Big - Avoid/defend the positions and moves where the attack can begin.
b. Small - Keep your opponent from completing what they have started.
c. Deep - Defensive options for when you are in a deep submission.

I’ve watch this twice in the last two days As a three stripe white belt I went into open mat today with a different mindset I got taped once in 6 rolls I submitted Two people and the time ran Out on the other three. I found other white belts and blue belts frustrated at my ability to defend against Their attacks when I was not so focused on escaping the position Thank you very much I think you have now changed the way I roll for a lifetime
  • You guys are Awesome! I’m 42, have been inactive for over a decade and decided it was time to do something. I’m 300 lbs and my body is broken from years of abuse and neglect. I signed my son and daughter up at one of your schools in Greensboro, NC and could not be happier with their progress in the short time they’ve been training. After two weeks, I too, signed up and have been working to better my physical and mental health. These videos give me hope I can work around physical limitations I now struggle with. Thank you for taking the time to produce these videos!

This is the first time we've done a multiple-video seminar series, but the topic is so crucial and so commonly misunderstood, that we had no choice. For the rest of the videos in the series, click on the link in the video description.
  • These guys OPENLY share their knowledge and a lot of people rag on them. Why??? Don’t hate them cause you ain’t them! Excellent job guys.!!

I have been to a seminar with Gracie and bought their dvd's, everyone cries about them making money from Gracie Jiu Jitsu, but I say thank you to them. Glad they are doing well and spreading this stuff, more power to them. Good guys.

These two guys are awesome. When they talk, I listen, but there is something about Ryron, when he talks, I really listen. He seems to have a really calm intelligent base. 100% respect to both!!!

Lol at 5:45: Rener: "He'll break his own knee if he spins around at this point." Ryron: "And I don't wanna do that."

This is like super gold. What I've observed after training some years is that instructors and almost everyone else focus on TECHNIQUES but barely on CONCEPTS. Concepts come first! Learn carefully about concepts, understand them and after that learn sme few techniques, they'll greatly adapt the concepts. The Gracies are pretty much transmitting this idea here, they're teaching us important concepts, fundamentals. That's KEY! Anyway, thanks tons for sharing!

Thank you so much. It's awesome to see a Master saying that. "If you are not losing, you are winning". Resist and persevere.
  • Hi Rener and Ryron. Thank you for taking the time to make these videos. I'm 43 yrs originally from Aruba living in Maastricht (NL). Martial arts past: Kyokoshin and kickboxing when I was very young. Now at 43 I recently joint BJJ (Gracie Barra). I have been training for a week now and it's all about surviving. I like it. Thank you very much for your videos. The do help! Muito obrigado

Love these guys! Wealth of knowledge that helps my mindset tremendously “if you’re not losing you’re winning” love it
  • @ozzmann3217
I could watch every 1000th variant you all do on every position a thousand times it’s brilliant how the brain works when you understand something the way you all do .. mind blowing
  • @LoneWulf1992
I love this advice. I actually looked into their grandfather's beginning years in forming the Gracie Jui-jitsu style and I remember reading about him going up against these bigger opponents and constantly ending up in draws. I never thought about the fact that his goal wasn't to always "win win," to get that submission or choke. He wasn't losing so he was winning 👍🏾
  • @KIToasty
This is way too good! The most important video I've watched as a white belt.
  • @f.h.3847
The definition of victory in jiu-jitsu is the actual way how it is in life. Thanks guys. I really appreciate that.
  • This is great! And these two guys, Ryron and Rener, as their father and a few of the other Gracies are GENTLEMEN. Non of this juvenile attempts at the big guy image -- cursing and swearing and rude inuendos. I always feel I can sit and watch them with my wife, or with any of my children. Real ambassadors! Real men! I'm trying to implement these principals at my Barra gym and having success. Thanks a lot men!
  • That’s pure gold.....”if you are not losing you win in Jiu-Jitsu.” That seems to be the essence of Helio’s philosophy. I really try to defend and shut down first and foremost when I roll. I have such a better time and I find more opportunities present themselves to me when I stay in that mind set. I can also establish my pace. I’m feeling my way through rolling intuitively instead of trying think it to a victory.
  • @SoulJiuJitsu
The last few lines are worth gold. I try to get more people to understand these thoughts. Thank you, Professors Ryron and Rener, for making the point so concise.

The trap reflex at 3:06 is amazing. I know they may have planned the presentation generally, but I am sure that that catch reflex was completely natural (developed from practice over time). Just phenomenal.
