This was long overdue! I am tying up some loose ends from the popular JBC soldering station video. The new design is simpler, cheaper, more efficient and equally powerful. I have learnt a lot about solid state relays in this project and I hope you will too.

If you are not sure whether you should build this, take a look at dangerousprototypes.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=56&t… That is a well tested, often built and much more universal soldering iron controller than mine.

  • When you do homebrew PCBs, it helps to put a small (0.5mm) hole in the through-hole pads - makes it much easier to hand-drill as the holes act as centering marks and help to guide the drill to the centre

awesome! really great work! your senses of humour and calm comments makes your videos 100% perfect
  • I have been on a Marco Reps Marathon for the last 4 hrs. I wish this guy was my neighbor. I could literally watch Him work all day long just to soak up some of His knowledge! Your, DYI JBC soldering station by the way, Rocks!
  • Discover you with Greatscott JBC solder station. Yours are better and I like your approach and your humor.

2:38 Technically, both MOSFETs are turned on. The back to back configuration is necessary to also block in the reverse direction, but reverse biased MOSFETs can also "actively" conduct backwards, since they are unipolar devices. This is the same as running a very low resistance resistor in parallel to a diode: Almost no diode losses

awesome project, I like the way it looks in the end with the black enclosure and the performance isn't bad at all.
  • @KeesHessels
Ordered the items to build your project :) Cant wait to see the result and have a good soldering station. Thank you for the schematics. Good luck.
  • @Rich77UK
Having a real JBC i am very fortunate...this looks as good in operation and if I hadn't inherited mine from an office closure I would be building this!
  • Hahaha, the 'inner hoarding tendencies' and 'higher purpose' comments are so spot on, I know that feeling exactly! If only I was half as competent as you, i might have found a higher purpose for half the stuff I have hoarded by now!
  • @splashman63
I learned so much from watching this build. I think I'm going to try and build this Thanks for all the insight and all your other videos
  • @Split10uk

  • @ParthBhat
finally the day I've been waiting for. thank you so much for all of your efforts and videos ... thanks for sharing
  • @Thermosphere
Very nice! JBC tips are awesome, when drived properly it behaves as if it had unlimited thermal mass; and that turns soldering to joy. I'm using C245 tips with my DC powered DIY controller.

The grave yard effect was cool. I had to watch it 3 times. Now I'm going back for one more.
  • @demofilm

  • @ziopoe

  • @MrBrymstond
That case must be worth more than most stations. Sweet build.
