HANOI, VIETNAM - Welcome to Hanoi, Vietnam, and there’s an abundance of delicious Vietnamese food to eat, but one dish I have to eat every time I’m in Vietnam is Cha Ca, or Cha Ca La Vong!
It was invented in Hanoi, Vietnam, originally at a restaurant called Cha Ca La Vong in the Old Quarter. The dish includes fish marinated in turmeric and lemongrass, then grilled. It’s then served on your table and sauteed with oil, turmeric, and a heaping mountain of green onions and dill. The combination of fried and grilled fish and fresh herbs is outstanding. You eat it together with bun, or rice noodles, shrimp paste or Vietnamese fish sauce.
Although I didn’t go to the original one this trip, I went to Chả Cá Anh Vũ which is one of the best rated local places to try it. It’s a Vietnamese food you don’t want to leave Vietnam without trying.

As a Viet, I genuinely love this video. Chả cá Lã Vọng is among the best of our traditional dishes but it is way underrated. Not many foreign youtubers, magazines, ads, or TV shows ever mention it. 😢

Love the Vietnamese series Mark, I’ve always wanted to go their and experience the food 😍

With all due respect Mark. Dill is native to North Africa and Middle East (including Iran). Besides Vietnam, Iranian cuisine features a great variety of herbs used in cooking fresh or cooked. Dill and fish in Iran have been on the menu for centuries. Cha ca seems to be a fusion of Persian/Indian influences (turmeric). Looks delicious none the less 👍

Great stuff Mark. I live in Vietnam just outside Saigon and have found some wonderful fish noodle dishes near me. The Vietnamese are the kings of noodles in my opinion :)
