MatPat is the definiton of that one English teacher looking for the meaning in a book when the author probably didn't even try to put a secret meaning in their book.

Alternate theory: the sharks are in an aquarium. That would explain the different species, as aquariums sometimes put different species of sharks that they know won’t harm each other in the same tanks. The older sharks are the ones that had been there the longest, so they “adopt” the younger sharks that are caught in the wild and help them adjust to their new life.

You gave a great point about chosen family. The family we choose will always be stronger than a biological family because they’ve earned our loyalty, love, trust and place in our lives. Biological family is just there and didn’t warn any of it. Not trying to hate on biological families. If you love each other that’s what really matters. I personally don’t have many positive experiences with biological family so it’s difficult for me to see “biological family” in a positive way
