Borel Fire forcing evacuations: 'We hope we can escape without any loss of life'

According to the Sequoia National Forest, as of Monday, July 29, 2024, the Borel Fire has burned 53,013 acres with 0% containment.

The fire began on July 24, 2024, at around 12:52 p.m., after a solo-vehicle crash. The vehicle involved, identified as a 1993 Chevy, caught on fire. The California Highway Patrol said the crash happened on Highway 178, west of Democrat Road. The 46-year-old man lost control of the vehicle and overturned down the embankment. The man died.

    Very sad. And beneath the charred remains of this Gold Rush town, are the remains of the thriving native civilization which was vanquished by Western Expansion. Conquistadors and cowboys and bandits and military might, industrialization, disrespect and ignorance has bled and poisoned and killed and burned… leading us to this sorrowful state of ruination. 😔
