Darth Vader was a coping mechanism for Anakin. He created him to separate himself from the acts that he was committing and do deal with all the lose he had experienced (Qui-Gon, his mother, Padme, Ahsoka, the "death" of his children, and Obi-Wan stabbing him in the back and crippling him).
