Google acted illegally to crush its competition and maintain a monopoly on online search and related advertising, a US judge has ruled.

The landmark decision on Monday is a major blow to Alphabet, Google's parent company, and could reshape how technology giants do business.
Google was sued by the US Department of Justice in 2020 over its control of about 90% of the online search market.

It is one of several lawsuits that have been filed against the big tech companies as US antitrust authorities attempt to strengthen competition in the industry.

  • Ever since Google changed their motto of "Don't do Evil," they've been doing a lot of evil. Good ruling.

It's a dump now. The paid-for/promoted/advertized search results are at the top, they're getting paid to promote whomever pays for it. It's pathetic. And they turned YouTube into a dump of ads too, more so than usual.

This took long enough!!! This was obvious years ago!!!

Firefox and other browsers depend on Google for funding. This ruling could end up trading the search monopoly with a browser monopoly.
  • Is it just me or does the "expert" look like he borrowed his Dad's blazer and was worried his Mother might call him down for dinner during the interview? Lol.

that's okay, just appeal it all they way up to supreme court, which can be bought anyway so why even bother

Imagine we lived in a world where Ask Jeeves became the big guys, or Bing, or Excite. Where it was common place to say I'll yahoo it.

So what does this actually mean for consumers lol
  • As a user we don't care, we use Google because we like it, just like why we use Steam for games, the user decides what they like
  • Google got all the money they can get. Time for some new players to get into the search market.

4:50 "...The current dominant players... shouldn't be the players controlling the next era of AI innovation..." China's response: BYD (Build Your Dreams) Google, Microsoft & Meta response: IYD (In Your Dreams)

I hope that Safari, Firefox, and other non-Google web browsers allow for more choice in search when running a browser for the first time. Similar to what Microsoft had to do with Browser Choice back in the 2010s with Internet Explorer.

As an internet user since the early 1990's, I attest that there were other and better options (Dogpile) in the early days. Results have been compromised since Google encouraged pay to be shown first tactics. Now, AI returned results are just the worst. The original search terms change automatically, which doesn't provide the desired results. Google FAIL.

YouTube's questionable, discriminatory, censoring algorithms should also be investigated.
  • Hi BBC. I’ve just looked at your next video. Rioters in England and Wales could be charged with terrorism offences, prosecutor says Is there any reason why comments are not open?
  • @LudiCrust.
For what it’s worth every tech savvy person I know uses a different search engine because of their data collecting practices & out of principle.

It is The best search engine. I will use google in any devices. not anything else. They display results I want that do not on other search engine.
